January 24, 2003 - santacruzsentinal.com - SANTA CRUZ —- Segway is staying away from Santa Cruz — at least for now. Less than a week before the company was set to give city officials and the public a close-up look at its much-talked-about two-wheeled transportation gizmo, Segway announced it’s bowing out of the appearance. "We have 100 employees, and it’s a pretty busy time," said Stacy Ferguson, Segway public affairs director. While Santa Cruz is among a handful of California cities considering banning the Segway from its sidewalks, cities elsewhere are embracing the product, Ferguson said, and that’s where Segway staffers are. "We have a huge event in Celebration, Fla.," she said. "The bulk of our staff is there." Segways, which can be purchased on Amazon.com for $4,950, are billed by the company as an alternative to walking. Segways weigh less than 100 pounds, look like push mowers and can travel as fast as 12.5 mph for up to 15 miles.
