I had access for a second, then the pigeon forge site said it was only available to subscribers. I did not read further on their site, as I did not intend to subscribe.

On an entirely unrelated note, I have read in many stories that trolls have an affinity for goats. I wonder if this is true, or just a (sub)urban legend.

I believe you are mistaken. Not urban or suburban, but a Norwegian fairy-tale, De tre bukkene Bruse, first published in the 1840's by Peter Christen Asbjønsen and Jøgen Moe in their collection Norske Folkeeventyr.

Need a reference?

Personally, I don't believe in fairy-tales.

Personally, I don't believe in fairy-tales.

I did a simple google search that said, 'Do Trolls like goats?' and got 1.4 mil hits.

The first several were about the billy goats gruff, which is your Norwegian tale, but in that case, each of the goats was accosted by the troll, and he offered to eat each one in turn. I would conclude that while he was outsmarted by the first two, and then afraid of the third, he surely did like to eat goats, and hoped to do just that.

So, my statement stands, including your reference, which is off topic.

Furthermore, while surely the first page of responses to my query offered only two topics, the billy goats gruff, and internet trolls (like the one I am feeding now), page after page of other stories about trolls also included references to them enjoying stealing and eating goats. Again, simple fact check proves that my comment that I had thought that trolls like goats seems to be authenticated.

And just because the most famous fairy tale about goats and trolls happens to be the one you referenced, does not in any way preclude an association between trolls and goats from being a legend. Urban, suburban, and in many other ways, still a legendary relationship.

Internet searches can produce anything. Facts are not only stated on the internet as facts, but also non-facts are stated as facts too. Finding the answer you wish in a google search is not a strong supportive argument.

And, while the Billy Goats Gruff may seem to defy it, engaging in debate with a troll is rarely fruitful.

Since you openly admit to not reading the news article (the subject of this thread), everything you've posted since has technically been off-topic, if you want to go there. But let's not. Instead, I've provided the full text of the article below.

PIGEON FORGE —

In a meeting Tuesday afternoon, the Pigeon Forge Regional Planning Commission unanimously approved a revised site plan for Goats on the Roof Mountain Adventure Park. The new site plan includes obstacle courses for Segways.

Previously, the attraction was called Goats on the Roof. The new name comes with the addition of Segways. Goats on the Roof owner Ross Ogle and Louise Wuebker, the owner of a local Segway business, were at the meeting to discuss the issue.

Community Development Director David Taylor said some documents were missing from the site plan when it was originally submitted, but he received them on the day of the planning meeting. He advised that the planning commission approve the revised site plan, pending his approval of the submitted documents.

Segway riders will be required to sign a release and watch a safety video. Only people ages 14 and older will be allowed to ride.

Planning commissioners wanted to know if slopes presented a safety hazard for Segway riders. Wuebker said the locations of the obstacle courses are completely flat.

Commissioners also asked whether the segways would be used outside the theme park on Wears Valley Road, where the attraction is located.

"Absolutely not," said, who also said that this venture is unrelated to her other local Segway business.

"It will be completely different."

Before the meeting, planning and city commissioner Jay Ogle was elected to the new chairman of the planning commission and the board of zoning appeals.

Planning commissioner Judy Harrell made the motion to elect him, saying he is the senior member of the planning commission. The motoin was unanimously approved by the planners who were present; Steven Houser and Jerry Clark were absent.

Bill Bradley, the former chairman, announced in December that he would step down from the position he held for more than a decade.

"I would like to say thank you to Bill Bradley for his 15 years of service to the city," Ogle said.

Harrell was elected to retain her position as vice chair, and Jeff Dodgen was elected secretary. Ogle was the previous secretary.

As usual, you are right. Many of us had older relatives that gave advice similar to the above, 'say something nice, or say nothing at all'.

I have a question for you.

The advice makes sense in the past, because people spoke to each other, so saying something would be heard. But, also, not saying something would also be 'heard', in that as we both know, silence at certain times can be deafening.

Now, in a time where there are more internet bullies than there ever were telephone tigers, and people often say things that are outrageous on line that I feel they would not say in person, we have to go beyond that good advice to deal with an internet forum.

If a person posts an untruth, and it gets corrected, then readers see the faulted statement, and the correction. If however, a person posts an untruth, and it goes unchallenged, then it sits forever, unchallenged, and in internet environment, that is a tacit approval or endorsement.

Any reader will see the discussion, and the untruth. They may not have the familiarity with the topic to know it is an untruth, so they will be poorly served. Any person of conscience who knows another has been misled and does not try to correct their path, would be uncomfortable.

I know I feel that way. An unchallenged falsehood on this forum leaves me uncomfortable.

If a person comes on here to ask how much pressure the manufacturer feels they should put in their segway tires, and someone answers that they should put 50 pounds of air in them (because they put 50 pounds in their bike tires) and it goes uncorrected, then new readers will be mis informed.

I believe in that case, most would publish the correction.

Most other cases are not so open and shut. Most are primarily a matter of fact with an overlay of opinion.

Now, I will be the first to say that civility should always be employed, and recognize that I have violated that rule as well. I do try to remember to be civil, but fall short some time.

So, while I recognize that civility should always be used, I have to ask, is it not a dis-service to allow untrue or inaccurate statements to go unchallenged on an internet forum?

Your point is well taken, Karl.

Let me amend that statement, say it nicely or not at all. Yes, there is a need for definite positive corrections but there are poor and good ways of doing that.

Blunt name calling or labeling with intent to discredit, is bullying. We see entirely too much of this in this political controversial day. I can't agree because.... allows one to express an opinion, correct or disagree and still show respect for another's opinion, experience or judgement, no matter how mis guided you may consider them. These things do unfortunately tend to escalate as tempers get ruffled and feelings are discredited.

The word civility is a good one, but one I fear that has little meaning or understanding today,
especially in the heat of disagreement.

I probably should have kept my mouth shut here, but as you say, there is a time for speaking up. If I did not express myself in a way that made my my exasperation very clear, but still fulfills a peacemaker's role here, I apologize.

Airdale, if you can't see the humor in the bizarro headline "Segways approved for goat-themed attraction", take a pill.

And after 12 years in residence, there is nothing you or anyone else can say or do to make me go away. Learn to live with it. Or take another pill.

Sorry Lily.

First off, Lily is correct. She gets my vote for first lady of this forum.

Next, I really do think we can be polite, even when we disagree.

I know that some will groan when I say this, but sometime I try to be polite by making a joke about a topic where some might disagree.

Name calling is a problem. But so can titles be a problem. A fool or an idiot are names that cannot be justified on this forum, even if a person posts a foolish or idiotic posting. I have been guilty of posting such entries, and am neither.

But I am not aware of another name for a troll on the internet. If I were to go to a cycling website, and say that Mr. Schwinn said his new bike would sell a million, and he was foolish and wrong, or that anyone who pedals to work is an idiot because they could take a segway instead, I would be a troll. I could be polite, I could be funny, I could be anything at all, but I would still be a troll.

It is a title. It is a role that JohnM chooses to play.

Now, just because he is a troll does not mean we have to be mean to him, or call him names. We can still call him out, ask him to justify or prove his continuous anti segway postings, but that does not mean we should be or are being mean.

He knows enough about segways, and he knows this is a segway enthusiast site, so when he posts negative, it is for the expressed reasons of being a troll. He likes to rain on this particular parade.

And I will give credit where it is due. He is usually polite. He is mostly civil when he brings the rain, over and over. And furthermore, it was not a bad line, saying it was overdue for a goat/segway pairing. It was funny. If anyone other than such a celebrated troll said it, the direction of this thread would have been different.

So, I agree with Lily. Lets try to keep it polite. We can be nice and still tell JohnM that we disagree with him, or that we know why he is here.

And thank you JohnM for telling us that you are not going anywhere. It does nothing to diminish your title or value to the site. All it shows is that you like going to a site that is for enthusiasts of a product you enjoy making fun of, and trying to diminish. That is your choice.
