Segway bill scoots to Senate

SPRINGFIELD -- A high-tech, scooter-type vehicle soon could zoom down a sidewalk near you, thanks to a measure approved by the Illinois House.

In action Tuesday, the House voted to support a number of changes Gov. George Ryan made to a proposal that would allow the Segway Human Transporter to be used on public sidewalks.

Legislation approved last spring was aimed at allowing the scooter, which travels at less than 20 mph, to be exempted from prohibitions against driving on sidewalks.

But Ryan said the law inadvertently may have barred local governments from having a say in whether the devices can be used.

The House concurred with Ryan's suggested changes to House Bill 5610. The legislation now moves to the Senate for further action.
