NPS rangers, interpreters and supervisors are testing five Segway HT units in various locations on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Grand Canyon, AZ.

The Park Service said its staff will use the Segway HT's to navigate the park, interact with visitors at the park's new transportation and orientation hub, Canyon View Information Plaza and along new segments of the Grand Canyon Greenway, a trail system designed to offer park visitors a wider range of transit options into and around the park. Park rangers will also use the Segway HT units to patrol campgrounds and for administrative uses throughout the developed area on the South Rim. The Grand Canyon trial follows a successful trial within National Capital Parks-Central in Washington, DC.

The Park Service points out that the Segway HT shows potential for increasing the mobility of NPS staff while at the same time reducing transportation effects on NPS resources. It is considered an environmentally friendly transportation device that will not negatively affect air quality.

The Segway HT is the first self-balancing, electric-powered personal transporter designed to enhance the productivity of people by increasing the distance they can travel and the amount they can carry anywhere people walk. It is designed for use in pedestrian environments, providing a non-polluting, low impact, short distance travel solution.
