Usually there's a bit of logic there somewhere. In this case, I think they may be looking to make GMail and Google Apps work better -- and these provide a platform for presenting ads targeted by user content. |

Basically, Google wants to reshape the landscape of the web (browsers) to better compliment their army (gmail, google docs, calendar, etc.) Web pages are no longer as simple as they used to be, being full of code that a browser was never really meant to chew through. Chrome has a stupidly fast javascript engine, which will pave the way for a new breed of webpages which are essentially applications.

Well, google makes most of its money through advertising. They give you a super search engine but you get ads. They give you gmail, but you get ads. They give you Chrome - and - you don't get ads. So why bother?

In other words, it doesn't give you ads directly, but it helps suck you into things that do, so it gives you ads indirectly. |

Thanks for the links - large and small!
I've had a look through most of the pages. Not all. A useful and clear way of explaining what they're doing.
