Too slow is as bad as too fast.
When I was training folks on PTs / HTs, I always encouraged then to roll through a bump.

In other words, roll up to a bump ( at an appropriate speed ) and continue straight through ( over ) it.
Practice with small bumps till you build up your knowledge and confidence.

If you stop, and try to start against the bump you are relying on traction, and if it slips or loses traction, yes you will fall down.

Get a more4mini handlebar and bigger tires. We have the mini for my wife because she has trouble walking like most older folks do. Works great in Walmart. Sucks on sidewalk slabs. Had we bought the more expensive more4mini handle bars the crash would not have happened. She sped up but the handles pulled out of the longer vertical post and DOWN she went. Bigger tires are in the works. We also have a couple of X2's that used to be rentals. They are great machines, built like tanks with the weight of Shermans! You would NOT want to lug them up three flights. I would stay away from any personal transport not related to Segway. Even though the mini is made in china it is made to Segway standards with the price to match. Any other brand is gonna be cheaper with short cuts. My opinion-worth what it cost ya!

There are available larger cross-section tires similar in tread designs to the all-terrain and turf models of the X2 machines. They fit the mini wheels of course, but give a bigger footprint and larger overall diameter. See more4mini.com for pictures and specs.

Thanks for all the ideas.
I returned the MiniPRO to Amazon and will sell my More4Mini handlebars on eBay.
Meanwhile, I bought a used Airwheel S5 on eBay.
See it here: http://www.airwheel.net/home/product/s5
It has 16-inch wheels vs. the 10-inch wheels on the MiniPRO.
It's a heavier, stronger machine that I believe will be more forgiving on uneven surfaces. If y'all would like, I'll report back after it arrives and I ride it a couple of times.
It's exciting. After years of relative stagnation, there's a lot happening in the electric scooter world.

Please do report back. That will help a lot of other folks in the future.

Thumbs up

Thanks so much to everyone for all the helpful advice.
Yesterday I bought a very Segway-like Airwheel S5 (two 16-inch wheels, 650 w/h of electricity). See it here: http://www.airwheel.net/home/product/s5
I got it used on eBay for about 25 percent more than I paid for the MiniPRO.
It's lighter than a true Segway, so I'll be able to put it into the trunk easily, but big enough and heavy enough that it should handle less-than-perfect surfaces easily.
It's exciting that at long last there are lots of new electric scooters, bikes and other devices entering the market.
I do wish there were a place to try out the various machines, but I live in the boonies, so that's not going to happen.
If you'd like, I'll report back after I've had it for a few days.

The specs show a 26" diameter tire. Is that right?

That's what they show - A 16" wheel with a tire that has an overall diameter of 660mm, which is indeed 26"

5" of rubber between the wheel and the ground - Should provide a better ride than a Seg I would guess

We were thinking of buying a 3rd Seg - Think we may give one of these a try

I don't think that's possible, there would be too much give in the sidewall for a stable ride.
