Apparently, the gist of the japanese translation is that the wearer of the bell is demonstrating how effective it would be to make way if he/she needs to get to a restroom fast!

I found it interesting how well everyone just cleared the way. In the US, lots of people may move to the side, but most would turn around and look as well. Most of the japanese just moved over to make room and did not look.
Not all societies are so well suited for the hive...
