I missed SegFest, but Hot August Nights was great...
Maybe next year I will be able to make it to SegFest. I've enjoyed reading about it and seein' the pictures. But I enjoyed a different kind of festival this weekend. Hot August Nights, held in Reno, NV every year, was teaming with all manner of beautiful cars, trucks... and one Segway.
I spent a lot of time gliding around, taking pictures of lots a pretty cars. They also had a great many vendors for just about every kind of after-market automotive gear you could think of. Since I just put some custom wheels and tires on my Segway, I decided to get some expert opinions from the folks at Big O Tires. It's good to get expert opinions. They made me feel real good about the choices I made. Well, they made me feel good about somethin' - I cain't r'member now. Jim |

Ahhh, I like that chopped nomad in the background in the middle picture. We have one here in Indianapolis on the west side with an orange chopped Nomad thats like that one, its about half the length of a normal size wagon. it is cool.

Funny thing. I got kicked out of the car show on the first day of Hot August Nights. Myself and my two sons were stopped as soon as we arrived and were shown a yellow slip of paper with rules. One was "no segways". Since my older son was using his Seg as a mobility device (segway polo injury) we were allowed to glide around a bit but were stopped again half way through with the supervisor giving us the boot.
Not knowing the laws in Nevada we reluctantly left viewing area and rode around the mall parking lot instead where we ironically saw a friendly security guard on an XT. Go figure. |

There were perhaps a half dozen of so car shows - Show & Shines - throughout Reno and Sparks on any given day. I was at the Virginia Street casino area event on 2 different days, the Grand Sierra Resort event (prob'ly the largest) 4 days and the Nugget Casino area twice. I saw no other Segways and none of the cops I spoke with saw any except a tour group one of those days (I didn't see them either).
I glide around with a hose in my nose (oxygen that I carry in a small backpack), so I don't usually get approached about any rule violations. I do go to the mall a lot and have heard they don't allow Segs inside unless you are handicapped - I agree with that rule. But I saw several electric or gas powered skateboards and skateboard type scooters and lots of bicycles in and around all the Show & Shines. Seems it would be discrimination to allow them and not a Segway used for fun. Jim |
