When my dad and I were on our segways in San Antonio last weekend, my dad almost ran over a squirrel. (No, he wasn't chasing it.) The squirrel ran out across the path in front of him. Good thing we weren't going full speed.

When someone/company/place/whatever bans Segways they have to prove there is a reason. I wonder if the Tyler Zoo can use the reactions of the Tigers as a reason.

It it well-documented that Segways produced lots of noise in the near-ultrasonic range. I'm sure the cats can hear it all too well.

I am no attorney, but a tiger that reacts to a particular person each time, when that person is not on the segway each time, would be a difficult pattern to blame on the segway.
One would have to convince that this particular tiger in the zoo actually remembered that particular person, and that the tiger reacted because that particular person has a segway. (even when the segway is not present) I personally feel that a tiger may be easily able to differentiate some people from others, but they will not remember what conveyance they were on last time. (Presuming of course all the contacts were relatively casual and passing, and that person did not do some horrendous thing in the eyes of the tiger)

Lowry Zoo, Tampa, Florida
On three separate visits to the Lowry Zoo, one of the finest in the country, I rode my Segway without incident. No security guard asked any questions, in fact, they opened the gate for handicapped folks using wheelchairs and I rode right in without incident. The animals paid no attention, the restaurant workers helped me find a table next to a huge window so I could view the zebras and elephants. The other attendees never paid any attention. Using the restrooms was an easy glide in and out with no difficulty. This is a boring thread, I know, because everyone at Lowry was so accommodating. The opposite is true across town when I attempted to enter Busch Gardens. The security gang got in front of the Segway and escorted me to the wheelchair rental (a three wheel, made in China scooter for $42 a day)! They must have thought that I was a a graffitti artist ao even worse, a litterer. The total cost for a retired handicapped person to visit Busch Gardens is $142.00 including a one day pass, parking, scooter rental and food / beverages.

Maybe we should sue Disney (and all the rest) for practicing medicine without a license....

I just e-mailed Mr. Tucker a review of my trip to the zoo. I was very nice, because he treated my wife and I with respect and kindness. Well, I would have been nice anyway. I hope he will respond.

There is only one answer.

Interesting point that we have discussed over the years. I agree with you. But we all can't sue Disney (and the rest) because the money is not there. These are big companies that live to bankrupt those that attempt to sue. If the class action is allowed it wouldn't matter anyway because Disney would be forever exempt from allowing Segways in. FOREVER ! The only way to achieve our goal is to fight the currant class action and maintain the status of the new regulations. Trying to pick off every other place one at a time is a futel effort. This class action will make or brake Segway use by persons with disabilities . Be Big, AMAC
