Well, it finally happened. I fell.
I had my first fall last weekend. I used it in an Atlantic City casino. I was happy because I just won $600 in Baccarat. I took my winnings, left and got on my Segway. I got lots of comments on how cool it was. The suddenly, "Beep! Beep! Beep! *shake* *shake* *shake*" Instead of calmly getting of the machine within 30 seconds I paniced like it was going to shutdown in 5 seconds. I use a cane for balance. I planted my cane, got one foot down then before getting the other foot off, I tilted the segway slightly towards me and I went down. Soft landing, held on to Segway. Startled people rushing to help.
It's a used i180. The first one I bought I had to return because of autoshutdowns. This one only did the autoshutdown a couple of times when it was running low (but the indicator showed more charge than there was). I hadn't used my Segway in months because of winter. I kept it plugged in the whole time. I've practiced more dismounting calmly and safely but the scary beeping and shaking sure doesn't make it easy to remain calm. |

I hope all is well, and you recover from both the fall and the excitement quickly...
Life would be boring if you had just taken your winnings and calmly went on your way...

It doesn't matter if you fall... all that matters is if you get up. It happens to us all, smile, pick youself up.. any fall that you didn't get hurt on is a freebie.
Congrats on the winnings $ and realize now you will be better equiped to handle life's next "adventure." Best wishes. |

I noticed that my segway - after a long period of unuse - was giving me a flaky battery usage display. I didn't think about auto-shutdown, but was worried as I was about 5 miles out on a hike with my husband.
What was discovered when we returned home and my husband checked it out was that of the 6 screws holding one of the batteries to the bottom, I only had 1 left. Not sure when they loosened and fell out, but it's worth checking out on yours to see if maybe you've got the same issue.

Another embarrassing bit about the situation is that I was drinking a gin and tonic at the time. I got on the Segway. I realized I still had a full glass of free gin and tonic left (my second). I swigged down about half of it and left the rest on the table. Then beep, beep beep...fall.
I wasn't even drunk or close to drunk. I think the reason I fell is because I paniced and because it had been months since I had been on a Segway and maybe my dismounting was not so crisp. But I still wonder if maybe it would have gone smoother without the drink. When it comes to driving I never drink and drive--not even a beer. Maybe I should apply that same policy to gliding. To be safe from now on: 1. I'm not going to drink and glide. 2. If I haven't used the Segway in a long time I'll be sure to fully test it and discharge and charge it first. 3. If I haven't used the Segway in a long time. I'll do some dismount drills to be safe. P.S. Paula, I don't know about the screws in my head but the ones on my Segway aren't loose. |

Dismount
Sorry to hear about your mishap but am glad you are OK. I almost went flying after hitting a speed bump in a parking lot. I was distracted by a guy staring at me. Lucky all that happened was I swore out loud. I had lots of emergency shut downs last fall as my batteries wore out so got used to dismounting safely. Seemed scary at first but now, nothing to it. I get shut down occasionally in icy conditions.
