Smile Travels with Celebrity Cruise & Air Canada

I just came back from a cruise with Celebrity (Rome to Fort Lauderdale) and accordingly the flights from Ottawa to Rome via Toronto and Fort Lauderdale to Ottawa via Montreal.

All was great, I travel with a Gen 1, nimh batteries. Thank you to Tarkus for the information and tips on how he travels with his Gen 1.

At first Air Canada gave me aggravation, I called back the next day and ended up speaking with someone you could reason with. The first person I had spoken to the day before said a Segway was a Segway no matter the battery type....end of story. Mobility aid or not.

The service from Air Canada was superb, they had someone looking for me at every airport on the way to Rome (they found me within minutes of me arriving at the airport) and made sure all worked superb.
The only hiccup was in Rome where the Segway was lost in the transfer from the plane to the cargo section. Rome was the only airport where the Segway was not brought to the plane door, in Rome they said that it was too heavy to be handled by airport staff (?) and it could only be sent to the special cargo pick up door. This would not have been a problem, only issue arised when they lost it. But in the good news it was found in about an hour.

I used the Segway in Italy on the side of some roads and whenever I could on the sidewalk, all was great, the drivers on the road gave it lots of respect (surprising because they do not for motorcycles) and it was no big issue with people walking on the sidewalk.

On the cruise it was great, absolutely no problems with the cruise line, a few times it was a bit of an issue getting into elevators. If you have cruised before you realize that not all people have a basic amount of politeness, as soon as an elevator arrives it does not matter if other people have been waiting, its first in the elevator that counts for classless people.

Coming back from Fort Lauderdale all was great, there was a small misunderstanding at first with the check in counter first but it was soon solved.

So I can highly recommend Celebrity and Air Canada if you are travelling with a Segway. Using it off the boat in Europe was easy and made the trip great. Usually my wife goes off the boat alone while I stay on because of the reduced mobilty, this time we were able to enjoy the sights together.
