Default December 21, 2012!!!!!

Apparently, there are several people who believe this day to be the end of the world. It is supposed to be similar to the Y2k fad pre-millenium. Hollywood has even made a movie about it slotted to come out in November!! Does anyone actually believe the world is going to end in 2012?? I hear some say it has to do with the end of the Mayan calendar! I am just curious to see if anyone here actually believes this stuff and if so why!! Also, any other discussion on this topic would be fun, I always find these theories a bit intriguing, in my personal opinion, crazy, but intriguing nonetheless! Please do feel free to comment. Just google search 2012 you will see what I am talking about!!

The mayan calendar ends in 2012. That's where this comes from. Our calendar ends on Dec 31st. What do you do with your calendar on Dec 31st? You throw it out and get a new one.

You are dead wrong. Our calendar does not end on December 31st. Our year does, not the calendar. (Unless you are Jewish, or Moslem, or a host of others whom you have not accounted for)

Really? Cause all my calendars end on the 31st. If you could link me to one that doesn't, I'd like to check it out.

Here's the thing. Imagine you've got an odometer with five decimal places. It'd start at 00,000, and gradually work its way up to 99,999. When it hit 99,999, it'd have to roll over to 00,000 again, right? That's why some think the world will "reset" when the Mayan long count runs out.

But when the Mesoamerican themselves had to deal with that, they just added another decimal place. For instance, when specifically referencing the year AD 4772, they used two additional decimal places in their counting scheme to make "room" to add more years.

It'd be a hell of a coincidence if their counting system just happened to line up with a polar shift or something, but it'd be just that -- a coincidence.

Mayan calendar? What utter nonsense! Everyone knows that the world ends on January 19, 2038.

12 21 1012 has several factors backing it. the one you mentioned is the mayan callendar which only ends every 5126 years. the mayans beleived that at the end of the callendar, which happens to be based off of astronomical observations, there will be a dawn of a new era and the old will end.

the second is nostradamus. nostradamus was a 16th century prophet whose predictions can be linked to almost every major event in history such as worldwarII, the election of Obama, the Kennedy assassination, the atomic bomb, and nine eleven. the one that gets people excited though is one that seems to predict the end of the the world in 2012.

the third and probably most relevent is the polar reverse. the polar reverse is a theory based off of the coriolis effect where water spins clockwise down the drain in the northern hemisphere of earth and counterclockwise in the southern. some scientist beleive this same effect could happen to the rotation of earths core if we were to change hemispheres of the milkyway such as what will happen in 2012. remember how the mayans based their callendar off of astronomical events? well this is one of those events.
the problem is that if the core were to reverse direction, the magnetic poles would switch and basicly every bad thing that could happen will happen due to the speed at which it would switch. earthquakes, tsunamis, weather, volcanos, temporary loss of magnetic field around earth. basicly the movie CORE

The Mayan calendar ends at 12/21/2012 because they carved it out of a round piece of rock and ran out of space.
