Dear Paul Harvey, I've been elected to inform you that the Segway is not that "s" word. It is a Human Transporter or to those that have emersed themselves within the Fiefdom of Glide it is affectionately referred to as a Glider. If you must continue to make an attempt to write about the Segway, please use the accepted designation of Segway or Glider.

Calling a segway a scooter is like calling a ferrari a car. Technically true, perhaps, but you know there's no comparison.

There's debate over describing the Segway as a " scooter " , and it seems to ruffle a lot of feathers out there. I for one am not as concerned about the term "scooter" , as I am hearing it described as a ( fume spewing , loud, and dirty )....." LAWNMOWER " !

Scooting is something you do to propel a vehicle. Technically, an electric, stand-on-with-one-foot vehicle wouldn't be a scooter unless you scooted it. As soon as you lift that other foot, scooting is abandoned.

Well in the final analysis whatever society decides to call the Segway is what it will be known as. Who would have thought a horseless carriage would someday be called a 'car' or a 'SUV' for that manner. Even though it's officially known as a human transporter I doubt that name will survive in the end. It's not quite elegant enough. Pehaps the term 'glider' may catch on but it's still confusing because the rest of the world has another perception of what a glider is. I think some people will always refer to the Segway as a scooter only because it's the closest word to accurately describe the Segway.

Interesting that the term auto-mobile (mobile by itself) is what is now used and was probably coined by the manufacturer, when horseless carriage was what was originally used by the general population. I'm hoping that over time it will just be come to be called an HT.

I have a few friends who ride Harley Davidsons. They always refer to their bikes as scooters when I'm around them. But, as far as the Segway name goes, I'll just call it a Segway...because that's what it is.

Yeah, that is interesting. To even come up with horseless carriage is odd at that. It evolved into motor vehicle, automobile, Betsy, HUV, Chevy, Olds, Ford, etc. It will be interesting what HT's will be called in the future when there are other brands out there as well. Oh anyone one know how the horseless carriage became a CAR?

Dear Paul Harvey,
In a recent story you refered to Dean Kaman's Segway HT as a "scooter". It seems that most owners and supporters of the Segway HT do not like this term, because a scooter has one wheel in front of the other. The Segway HT has it's wheels side by side. This more closely resembles a spool, such as wire is wound on. Please use the more correct term: "spoolter" instead of "scooter" and the spoolter rider should be refered to as a "spoolster". Thank you. Best regards, (name withheld to protect the perpetrator) I can't wait to see how he responds to this.......... lmao. |
