You're kidding, right? Six minutes is too much trouble?
I can't believe that you can moderate this forum but not create your own keys with this method

Lipinsky,

Great post, thanks for doing all the leg work!

I have to debate your suggestion that it only takes six minutes. It took me over an hour to place a simple order for six items on the ibutton web site. Has to be the worst web site shopping cart ever!

It keeps crashing, losing the data, etc. If you don't know all the part numbers you want, exactly, it clears your cart and you get to start all over.

Fortunately, I got the order in and am anxiously awaiting the chance to implement your process.

I've ordered the items in Lipinsky's post, and look forward to trying a slower turning rate on my red key. But I was concerned about the reply from LLC that someone posted regarding the use of non-standard keys recording an entry in an internal error log, and possibly voiding the warranty. So I emailed Segway, asking what their official policy is. I received the following reply:
---
Below is some feedback regarding usage of Non-Segway Keys:

A Segway HT key may be copied just as a computer disk or house key can be.
Providing your Segway HT key to someone for copying or modification may
compromise the security of your machine because, in effect, you are
providing him/her with the security code to your Segway HT. The key copier
can make as many copies of the key as they want and can even share your
key’s security code with others. You can purchase duplicate key(s) from
Segway LLC without risking the security of your device.

The maximum speed and steering sensitivity of a Segway HT are internally
stored on the Segway HT. Programming a key beyond these limits will not
increase the speed and turning capability beyond the internally stored
limits. These limits are set at 12.5 mph for the i167.

It is possible to create a key that combines speed and steering settings
that differ from those Segway LLC provided with your Segway HT. Some of
these combinations of settings may be outside the limits determined
appropriate by Segway engineering. These settings may cause unexpected
performance to someone who has become used to the standard Segway-supplied
keys. Use non-factory key settings at your own risk.

The Segway™ Human Transporter Limited Warranty does not cover keys that have
been altered or damaged by parties other than Segway LLC (in other words, if
the keys were sent away, and now don’t work, they will not be replaced under
the warranty).

I hope this information proves useful.
---
I read this as 'Go ahead, but be careful, because you're on your own'.

If I find that I like the red key better as it was originally, it will have only cost me $50 for three spare keys, which I believe is half of what Segway charges for a single replacement key.

An interesting quote from HowStuffWorks.com:

Security: The Segway uses an electronic key system. The key, which looks something like a car lighter, stores a 128-bit encrypted digital code. The vehicle won't start unless the key is plugged into its port. The key can also store settings for vehicle operation. Segways include one key for "beginner mode," where the vehicle has a lower maximum speed, and one key for "experienced mode." Segway plans to offer programmable keys down the road, which well let users store particular operation settings.

I thought the interesting line was about Segway offering programmable keys down the road which will let users store particular operation settings.... Seems like that is happening already... Perhaps part of the plan all along?

Several questions regarding keys:

1. Are the keys affected by magnetism? I frequently have magnets in my pockets along with my keys. (No, I'm not a total freak - I sell custom-made neodymium magnets).

2. Can you program in a slow turn without having to twist the grip at all. (I'm thinking about an exhibit where the HT spins around ever so slowly without me having to tape or jam something into the turning grip).

3. Can you disable the stick-shake limiter when going backwards? (okay, I am a total freak).

4. What does "DIY cheap" mean?

Onward!

Hey cstull! That is the worst site I have ever tried to place an order on. I kept thinking they are trying to demonstrate how good their security is. And the way they packaged the merchandise. Hey, they packaged each key fob separately in a static proof bag (the key fob?) and then in a separate box inside the box they were shipped in. They used two boxes for shipping. Half of one of the boxes could probably have contained all the items. I apparently screwed up because I managed to order only 4 key fobs when I wanted 5. Well, that key fob will have to wait. The equipment and software works great and making duplicate keys is relatively easy. A big thanks to lipinsky for the help! The Segway keeps us learning new stuff. Lincoln
