Default Hurray to Royal Caribbean!

My wife and I just returned from a seven day cruise to Alaska on Royal Caribbean's Rhapsody of the Sea. We were treated extremely well. Absolutely no trouble, no problems. From now on I'll check with Royal Caribbean first. They are first rate...unlike Norwegian Cruise Lines who still claims USCG regulations forbide Segways at sea in spite of the USCG saying there is no such prohibition and Norwegian's inability to cite the regulation.

I am really, really upset with Norwegian. After specifically asking about the Segway and receiving their assurances I could take my Segway, I paid for the cruise. The following day they informed me I could not take the Segway because of USCG regulations. They charged me a cancellation fee of $678. I've protested this deceptive trade practice through my VISA card and am propared to go to small claims court.

On day two of the cruise we were in 10 to 12 foot seas so I left the Segway in our cabin and walked with a cane. Other than getting very tired, this was doable...but it sure did convince me of the Segway's utility. We were in an ocean view cabin and had the beds separated and against the walls with the aisle down the middle. We also put the small chair upside down on one end of the sofa and parked the Segway in the desk hole. The plug on the desk is within easy reach for recharging the Segway without an extention cord; plenty of room.

I gained 5.5 pounds.

To gain 5.5 pounds in one week you would have to ingest almost 20,000 calories! WOW! Basically you ate three weeks worth of food in 7 days!

Thanks for the heads up on Royal Caribbean.

Default So where'd you take it off the ship?

I'd really have liked to have it in Ketchikan. Or Juneau. All that space to explore, and only a few hours in port... sigh.

dad, you need to go on a real cruise, not one where the boat is smaller than a house. when the food is paid, and abundant, and there isn't much walking, but a mess of lounging, then the pounds come rolling on! either way, good to know about norwegian, my wife and i have been thinking of a cruise for our 5 year anniversary, and would be happy to know the behaviors of the lines. (we took a Royal Caribbean for our honeymoon and loved it)

Default Celebrity cruises was GREAT!!!!!!!!!

I took my i180 on a Celebrity alaskan cruise in 2007. I told them it was my "standing wheelchair" befor the cruise and had absolutely no problem with using it on board and rode it to all my meals, up on the top deck, down the ramp in juneau, Ketchikan, Icy Straits point, then on the train to Denali and Fairbanks. I was sort of a "celebrity" at each stop and was told I was the first segway in a few of those stops. Watch out for wet gangplanks and be prepared to switch to assist mode since if one wheel loses traction the seg will spin.

Did I mention how great it was to have my Segway available in Victoria for the tour of Butchard Gardens and the Butterfly House? The land tour went by bus and the Segway rode in the luggage compartment under the bus. During the train ride in Skagway I rode in the car with the wheelchair lift. Thanks for the tip about Celebrity being Segway friendly.

Default anyone have any luck on norwegian?

so, after having orbitz seemingly think that all was ok with taking a segway on norweigian, I get this:

In your original e-mail you advised the guest is bringing a scooter and now you call it a SEGWAY. Please be advised that SEGWAYS are not allowed on board. If the guest is bringing a mobility scooter (that has a seat) there is no problem. But if the guest wants to bring a two wheeled mobility machine that they stand on, this is not allowed.

anyone have anythoughts on how I can respond? wonder if a "segseat" would avoid this. Thanks in advance for any much needed assistance.
