I was similarly contacted by a firm that wanted to rent my HT for a three-day trade show here in Chicago. I opted not to do it. When you rent out your HT for something like this, you're renting it to people who haven't had Segway LLC's training, and you're surrendering all control over who rides it. I wouldn't want someone else giving people demo rides with my HT. This is just my opinion, but I really don't think it's a good idea. The bottom line is that no one else is going to care for your machine like you do, or be as good of an ambassador for this technology as you are. One incident of irresponsible use at this stage of the game can have really negative consequences for all of us.

What are they going to do with it for a day? A place in Canada charges $20/hour or $100/day. If they want to demo it, tell them they need to rent you along with the machine so you can demo it for them. I'd charge $250 for 8-hours for me and the machine. Use the black key.

segwayowner, this sounds like a bad idea when someone "might" pay for liability "out of pocket" and wants to use the ht for "something"...?

cheers,

Although it unfortunately creates an obstacle to the occasional rental by owner, a rental contract should be used to protect both parties and clarify expectations and responsibilities regarding such issues as intended use, training of users, liability, insurance, etc.

I have anticipated the difficulty most people will have setting rental rates and have some recommendations on www.SegCenter.com . However, since rental locations are just now emerging and a daily rental to an already trained user is not the common scenario, daily or hourly rates have not been included in the "Market Rates" section. One factor to keep in mind is that if you have a location where people walk up all day to rent Segs you are operating much more efficiently and can thereby offer lower rates than if you are making special arrangements for each transaction. Not including delivery or travel costs, or any legal fees to prepare a contract, and including a liability waiver by the renter, IMHO $100 still seems to be at the low end of the reasonable range, considering the work in arranging and facilitating a unique transaction. My guess is that a fair rate under these circumstances might be in the $200-300 range. I do not claim to be an expert, except maybe relative to all other experts in the Segway rental pricing field.

I have rented it out on two occasions for trade shows...

$300 one day, $250 1-3 etc...

I have them sign several waivers, provide personal training to one person, and provide the video. I only rent to someone I have seen ride the machine and who can speak intelligently about it.

Thus far I have rented for 11 days. I do not forsee doing it more in the future unless by chance. I should say all has gone without any incident at all.

adios
