Is it the case they believe "he who controls the largest web browser marketshare controls the web"??
How does this differ from most anything Google does?

Usually there's a bit of logic there somewhere. In this case, I think they may be looking to make GMail and Google Apps work better -- and these provide a platform for presenting ads targeted by user content.

Basically, Google wants to reshape the landscape of the web (browsers) to better compliment their army (gmail, google docs, calendar, etc.) Web pages are no longer as simple as they used to be, being full of code that a browser was never really meant to chew through. Chrome has a stupidly fast javascript engine, which will pave the way for a new breed of webpages which are essentially applications.

Well, google makes most of its money through advertising. They give you a super search engine but you get ads. They give you gmail, but you get ads. They give you Chrome - and - you don't get ads. So why bother?

I think the features of Chrome will spur on its competitors - javascript speed, like you say, is a big plus. But surely they'll make their apps standards compliant, which will make them work in all browsers (the entire point of web apps). They'll shoot themselves in the foot if they start saying, anyone can use gmail, but to get the best from it, you have to swap your default browser for ours.

Because if Chrome makes gmail, google apps, etc. more attractive -- you get more ads.

In other words, it doesn't give you ads directly, but it helps suck you into things that do, so it gives you ads indirectly.

Yes, this is what I meant when I said that google wants to reshape the landscape.

Correct on all points. Google is not reinventing standards or changing javascript in anyway. Plus, all this code is open source, and they are actively encouraging other browsers to implement this stuff. They WANT all browsers to have fast javascript. They WANT all browsers to have more intelligent memory and thread management. They made Chrome because nobody else was interested in advancing these areas. Google doesn't want to control the browser market; they want to give it a kick in the pants so users can use their services better/more. If you are at all interested in what their aim is, you should read the comic book introduction that they created. It explains EVERYTHING.

Thanks for the links - large and small!

I've had a look through most of the pages. Not all. A useful and clear way of explaining what they're doing.
