Airlines restrict the transportation of Segways with Li Ion battery due to Haz-Mat rules. Therefore you are limited to a generation 1 segway with NiMh batteries ( I-167 or I-180 ) None of the generation 2 (with leanstear) will work with NiMH.

You can find endless discussion about this in this forum with a search on airlines.

If your travel is by car or Segway Anything goes
If your travel is by Boat, better search about cruiselines as results very..

What are the rules for private planes and charters? Are they the same as for commercial airlines?

Here is a good thread about this issue:

http://forums.segwaychat.com/showthr...light=airlines

To summarize

1. This is only possible with a Gen1 using NiHM batteries. Lithium-Ion batteries are considered hazardous material and are not permitted on passenger planes.

2. Most airlines are accomodating to those with disabilities. There is a "Air Carrier Access Act" that prohibits discrimination. You may encounter problems if your itinerary has a connection to a small airline that has no experience with Segways.

3. You may need to prove you are using NiHM batteries. Carry a wrench just in case you may need to show them the battery. Some suggest carrying a receipt from the dealer or a photograph of your battery and your ID. Some airlines have customer service manuals for Gate agents that helps them differenciate between L-ion and NiHM batteries.

4. Of course call ahead and let the airline know that you will require certain accommodations. If all goes well you should be allowed to glide right up through the jetway and into your plane.

This is just the information I've gathered from various threads. I have not personally attempted this yet. But I can't wait to explore the world on my Segay
