When my husband decided to purchase a segway for my use, he wanted to make sure I wouldn't have any problems using it, because in addition to compartment syndrome in both legs, I suffer from a balance disorder.

We found a tour near our home and invested the $50 per person to try them out. They had a large open area with 30 minutes of instruction and practice before hitting the trail and helmets for the participants. We also had to sign waiver's to protect the operator against legal actions. Even with that, one woman got nervous, ran off the trail and threw herself off into the palmettos.

So, even with care, accidents are going to happen. Some people are not going to feel overly confident with only 30 minutes of instruction and it might take much longer for others (for me there was almost an immediate adaptability that I can not explain - it was like I'd been gliding all my life).

However, people should take care in choosing who they select when considering touring. If people stopped using disreputable tour-guides, they would soon go out of business or change their ways.

As to the issue of children I have 6 grandkids who, when they visit, just love to tool around the yard on my segway. They range in ages from 13 to 4. Only the 4 year old is so small he can not manage my Gen 1 XT. I did make sure each and everyone of them was comfortable and knowledgeable in the do's and don't's (such as "Don't run over your sister!"), but not once have they suffered accident or injury. The difference between my grandchildren and some other children I've been around is that my grandchildren understand the consequences of disobeying their parents (or grandparents). I know some children - regardless of age or size - that I wouldn't want to be anywhere near if they had access to a segway.

Paula,

I liked your comments about the kids (or grandkids).

So often, people seem to think that generic rules can do a better job than considered and attentive parenting. There are things that an attentive parent (or grandparent) can surely do with kids that are just not appropriate all the time, or with other situations.

Have fun. Keep smiling.
