SAN FRANCISCO -- A city supervisor has introduced legislation to exempt San Francisco from a statewide law that allows the use of two-wheeled Segway scooters on California sidewalks.
Supervisor Chris Daly said Monday that San Francisco and other California cities should ban the silent scooters that can travel up to 12 mph because they pose a danger to seniors, children and the blind.
The proposed ban is being supported by San Francisco-based groups that promote senior welfare and pedestrian safety.
"It is distressing the governor again shows lack of concern for the safety of vulnerable populations,'' said Bob Planthold, spokesman for Senior Action Network.
"The lawyers I talked with said they will be delighted to sue Segway over the injuries they will cause,'' said Jeanne Lynch, San Francisco's chairwoman of the Paratransit Coordinating Council.
The U.S. Postal Service began testing the Segway scooters as mail-delivery vehicles in San Francisco and five other U.S. cities in June
