I have a VW GTI Hatchback. It holds my segway in the back and much luggage. It is not large but works great for me

I think the consensus is that there is no consensus. To each their own. (although the GTI gets a couple nods...)

The Chevy HHR
That's my recommendation after I test-drove every vehicle in a price range of $20k to $60k. I sold my all wheel drive Ford Explorer and purchased a 2006 Chevy HHR - in red, and have had no regrets. The HHR stands for His Holiness Russell or Her Highness - depending on my mood...
All the cargo space of my Explorer (and even better than the Lexus 300, Toyota Highlander, Ford Escape and Subaru Forester), but with 24 mpg city and over 30 highway (regularly I get 36 mpg on the highway). And that's in Los Angeles. I just had a 3500 lb rated hitch installed and though I can easily fit the Segway in the back, I now just have to load it up on my Segway hauler. There's a 2.2l and a 2.4l option. Go for the 2.4. It's got speed and pep and climbs mountains really well and even handles the snow pretty well with traction control (I have a vacation home in the mountains, so it was a concern...) The only drawback? Crappy cupholders. Now, if it only came in a convertible and had 4-wheel drive... So much for 2 cents...

My Car
I love my Toyota Matrix. It has room to strap down my Segway in the back and a built in inverter so I can charge it while I'm driving.

2002 Vw Gti
I drive a 2002 VW GTI, love the hatch back, lots of room, low lip.
Make sure you change the timing belt, I put it off and got bit for alot of money.

Well, I don't own a car, but having loaded the Seg in a couple cars, the Hyundai Accent works much better than the Scion Xd. Jeep Cherokees aren't bad either.
