So, I was thinking about this on my commute home.
Remanufacture the CS and rethink the mounting of it. It's not like it's mechnically required to be placed in the front center of the base unit, so move it over to a front right or left corner of the machine (whichever works better for the client) . The new CS would be essentially shaped like an inverted "L" with a hinge that allows it to be swung out of the way. This leaves the entire front section open and unobscured. Obviously the swinging portion would also have a locking mechanism for both the out of the way and operating positions. Alternatively, you could do away with the CS entirely in its traditional sense and instead have handles on either side of the device. One would be mostly non-functional other than to serve as a grip and the other could have a twist control similar to the throttle on a helicopter collective only instead of being a throttle, it would be the stearing control normally found on the CS. So, does anybody have a .dwg or .obj file of a Gen 1 machine? I could make a quickie sketch of the ideas that way.

Relocate just the CS, or the CSB + CS?
I ask because there is a cable routing issue between the CSB & powerbase. The cables probably could be extended, but the mechanical fastening of the CSB to the powerbase would have to be worked out. Both pieces are cast alloy, so an adapter plate might be needed if you wanted to use the existing holes. Might also have to do something about the rider detect switch nearest the relocated CSB, depending on clearances. If you left the CSB where it is, a 'question mark" shaped CS might do instead of the "L" shaped CS. Then the "corner" could be configured to be on the left or right with the same part, just turn it around. Sorry, I don't have any drawing files. I recall that there is someone who made some kind of CAD file for an advertising project. If I can find it, I'll add the link to that thread to this post. Edit: The post I was thinking of is this one: http://forums.segwaychat.com/showthread.php?t=15786 The poster with the gen1 3D model was bodyelectric. Looks like you posted to him/her on that thread. Did he/she get back to you with the file? Also mentioned on that thread was the gen1 exploded view, a 4896 x 6335 .jpg file: http://www.segway.com/downloads/2005...ue_labeled.jpg Last edited by bystander; 08-24-2007 at 04:27 AM.. |

Nice ideas, trying not to re-create the wheel maybe just remounting the existing handlebars on top of the new question mark shaped CS? And instead of rotating out of the way the top of the question mark could have a lift hinge on the side for access.

I just know that at some point I'm probably going to have to do it myself. Certainly would help folks design after-market stuff if Segway Inc would fork over some exterior models. Doesn't even have to be all that fancy, just basic dimensions of the exterior surfaces and bolt patterns. You know they absolutely have this stuff sitting on their server somewhere, it's just getting it that is a pain / impossible.
