What kind of person do you need to be to be a moderator on SC? How much time and effort does it take?

A very big Thank You goes to JohnG, who responded to my PM by re-opening the "moderating" thread. Even more important to me is his willingness to discuss how moderating is done on this forum, and the challenges that moderators face. His openness is the right approach, in my estimation, and is a breath of fresh air.
I accept JohnG's statement that "We could care less about the information you post here, as long as it's consistent with the TOS" as a statement of intent. However, I have had a number of questions about how those Terms of Service are interpreted and implemented, and about policies that seem to exist, but are not written. I look forward to getting answers to those questions, should they come up again. But rather than re-hash my old complaints at this time, I'm choosing to believe that some of the issues I have complained about will be addressed without further discussion. Instead, I'm going to suggest that this thread be left open, or perhaps that even a sticky thread be created where people can post questions about why specific moderating actions were taken, and get clarification about about why those actions were taken. I would hope that we would get candid moderator responses to those questions, as I did from JohnG. Without a threat of being "put into moderation" simply for posting on this issue, SC members could then feel free to chime in with their thoughts on a given situation, as they have already done in this thread. |

Members are always welcomed to either post to this forum if they have some community feedback or a specific concern, or contact me via PM regarding a concern.
I'll admit, moderating here is sometimes a hit or miss proposition depending upon how busy/preoccupied/etc. we are in our respective lives. I agree that our goal should be consistency in moderation, and we do talk to try and get as close as possible to that. But I also admit we often fail in that regard. If you'd like to be considered as a moderator here, the only hard rule is that you have to have been a member here for at least 6 months. I also prefer active members over those who are largely inactive, and members who are respected by the rest of the community. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to nominate yourself or another. We don't need more than 3 or 4 moderators at a time, and right now we have 2 active ones. John
