New item from Google
If you are familiar with Google satellite maps, this program goes one step beyond...
http://earth.google.com/ It requires that you have a fairly recent computer (2-4 yrs old), a 3D graphic card, and a fast internet connection. It's about a 10-11 MB download. A warning. If you load this into your computer, you may loose several minutes to several hours - due to being wrapped up with using the program. There are a number of preset points of interest to visit (double click them to travel there). Check out Chicago. (It has plain 3D buildings, some other cities don't have any buildings yet.) The Grand Canyon is in 3D, and you can pan, spin and zoom. Unlike Google satellite maps, this program covers the whole world, not just the US. Don't forget to check some of the boxes in the lower left corner while visiting urban sites. All sorts of interesting things will pop out such as local web cams, restaurants, etc... With this program, you could spend more time planning an excursion on your HT than the travel time of the actual trip. |
