Gen 1 XT repair question
How easy (or hard) is it to:
1. repair the left / right turning grip on left end of XT handlebar? 2. find either a new or used twist grip mechanism only? 3. or, do I need to buy the entire handlebar system to repair just the left/right turn twist grip? 4. how much does just the twist-grip part cost? All I've seen available doing a web search is like really expensive, around $1000 for the complete, used handlebar / column setup. Thanks |

It depends.
Hi
It's easy if all your problem is that the twist grip itself has worn, or the rubber coating is perished. The grip was a standard Segway part, and just about any dealer should assist you. Takes a minute or two to fit the new part. It's anything but easy, if you have broken off the grip ! This is very difficult to repair. Some folk have made repairs, with varying degrees of success. There's magnetic sensors within the handlebar, and supporting electronics too. There's magnets in the grip. All must be carefully aligned, and robustly fitted. That's not easy if the stem that holds the grip has been broken. I hope this assists you. Michael |

I'm really wondering how much I could expect to pay to replace the twist-grip, as it seems to be the most obvious "weak-link" to break pretty easily. I appreciate the background on what is involved in rebuilding the turning device....I'm seriously considering buying a used XT that I've seen. It has recent new batteries, but, because parts are so costly, I guess I'm really wondering what goes wrong most often, and what I might expect to pay the dealership in San Francisco to repair, ie, the twist grip. Is $1,000 for the handlebar assembly a fair price? Seems a bit steep to me. Thanks

Unfortunately, they are very expensive, because of their rarity. Some people buy an entire machine just for parts like this.
Regardless of all else, once the machine is running, my advice would be to put the handlebar guard on. That is a metal device that will protect the handlebars from breakage, and was introduced by the factory a couple years after the machine was introduced. Good luck. Have fun.

handle bar guard
Where do I find the Gen 1 XT handlebar guard...any recommendations that don't mean a hundred phone calls to find one?

Quote:
Gen 2 has both i and x series, and the handlebar is the same, but the lean steer that it is attached to is slightly different. (either will work, but they are different) By this I mean that either gen 2 handlebar/leansteer frame will work on any gen 2. The whole set up is different than gen 1. The handlebar guard that was at the other end of the link is the only one made for gen 1, and is the correct guard for all gen 1 machines. It bolts to both the handlebar and the control shaft.

Now I get it
Thanks, I must admit I've been confused by the model numbering used, and also why Segway doesn't manufacture and sell all spare parts to every Gen 1 owner...makes it a bit of a steeper hill to glide through easily for a novice owner.
Everyone, thanks for the help... I haven't purchased the XT yet, as I'm trying to understand what buying a used one "as-is" means, hassle-wise, if I get it and it has problems. |
