A Rave for my town

Politics aside (please!), the stimulus money that was given to states was used by Salem, Oregon to create ramps at every, single corner in the city. I am able to glide to any destination within the city and never be faced with a curb.

I visited a friend in San Jose, California last summer as often had to backtrack up to ½ a block to find a driveway, go into the street and then look for a driveway on the other side. Awful!

If you are ever heading to Oregon, please stop by our city. I go wine tasting by Segway, the Art Fair, parks, libraries...well, anywhere you want to go. I have been stopped by police exactly one time. The officer came up behind me and said, "You cannot ride that on the sidewalk!" I told him that I could, pivoted so my gimp sticker was visible, and he said, "I'm very sorry. You can ride that ANYWHERE you want. Have fun and scooter safely."

I love this town on a Segway!

So what are the laws if you don't have a gimp sticker?

Here in Washington state all users are allowed on the sidewalk and bike paths unless the local government says no. Which means (for now) only the bike paths and parks in Seattle are restricted.

3,500 miles overall . . . . 0.25 miles in Seattle.
Seattle pubs and coffee shops are losing out.

The law in Oregon does not require that a Gimp Sticker be in place. The Segway is classified as an EPAM device, the same as any mobility scooter if it being used as such. As long as you verbally identify your Segway as an EPAM device, that is all that is required.

Of course, I have copied the Oregon statute onto my iPod, just in case.
