It matters not to me which form your service to your country comes in... All are to be respected...

OF course, real men wear Army Green... But our little brothers in the Army Air Corps... I mean the Air Force, and our ocean going transport operators, the Navy, are also to be respected...

I too admire all our military men and women.

We have the Gate Guards aka The United States Marine Corps

We have the Summer Campers aka The United States Air Force

We have the Green Apes aka The United States Army

We have the Puddle Jumpers aka The United States Coast Guard (really part of DoT but hey, we'll include them!)

and, last but not least, we have the GREAT DEFENDERS OF THIS COUNTRY, the Sailors who let us all sleep well at night, aka the United States Navy.

Of course, then we have the REAL military, those of us who served previously and remember when it was "so much harder, so much tougher and we still did the job so much better".

Steven,

You're spot on with the "Real Military" line. I can still remember badly ventelated berthing areas aboard ship with very a thin matteress lying on cavass threaded with line to a metal frame. Oh, and stacked 3-5 high with bags on side of each for dirty socks and such. Have you been aboard a modern ship lately. Kind of like the QM in comparison.

Oh, and we won wars by actually fighting them to win instead of waging polictical correctness campaigns around the world. Just musings from someone that's seen it all.

Jim,

I've been on new ships and old ships, had to berth in operating theaters with canvas bunks slung between uprights.

I remember when we didn't have e-mail and regular contact with "home". Hell, I remember when mail call was the highlight of your week....and you prayed you got something, anything, even an "Any Sailor" letter.

I've been on new subs and old subs and still wonder how those Sailors are able to withstand 90 days (minimum) of underwater action. Bubbleheads truly are a breed apart....and they don't even get a mail call.

Yes, life aboard is a little better now but there still is no way to explain to anybody what it is like to have to drill holes in the IO for months on end...away from your loved ones, away from home, away from we most of us take for granted.

Whether you are, or were, a Sailor, a Soldier, a Marine, or an Airman, my hat is off to you!
