Yeah, it wouldn't be like a Segway, where you have the convenience of sending it to New Hampshire for three months and paying more on just the shipping than the entire cost of that knockoff.

I'm sure a real Segway is way better than the knockoff, but is service really the right comparison?

I have not seen any in the USA. Perhaps this is among the first. I am curious as to what he intends to sell them at, as he mentioned a buy it now price, but did not list it.

I know it is a knock off, but I am curious to see how it works, and how close to the operational parameters of the segway it comes. The Q was a knock off, but it was not even remotely close to the operational equivalent. This one has had very little independent press or statements, as I have pretty much only seen data from the manufacturer...

There is more to worry about with this sale than just where to get it serviced, if if breaks.

The seller has a short but good reputation on ebay (100%) but that is all as a buyer, not a seller, except one single sale. That does not reflect anything much in the way of positive about the seller.

He wants local pickup, which makes sense from his perspective, but he has already posted that he will pull the auction if he does not get his price. That seems odd to me. I thought the way to do that is to offer the auction, and set a minimum price. That way bidders will not loose out, and know where the minimum price is set, or at lease if they are above or below it.

Also, I asked two simple questions to the seller, and as yet, he has not let them be posted. They were not mean or negative questions, so there is no reason for them not to be posted, and the ad says that there were no questions. To me this is a red flag. (IF he wanted to keep them off the ad, but answered them directly, I would not be as concerned.)

Ebay is a great place to buy things. But it is also an easy place to loose a lot of money with nothing to show for it.

There are already 7 bids by 4 different bidders, so under eBay rules, the seller can't "pull the auction" (except under precisely defined circumstances).

Inexperienced seller, so may not have understood about reserve price (minimum selling price).

Seller has been on eBay since Sep-14-02, although has not done much buying or selling.

This auction would be relatively safe - if you won, and paid using PayPal, it would be protected. Of course, if there's a problem, you would be out the money for 2-4 weeks.

The "Buy It Now" price disappears if people start bidding. I think it was about $200.

I also noticed the local pickup requirement, as well as the "no refunds or exchanges." I have stated in the past that I have increasing mistrust towards eBay (based on poor experiences), but somehow that seems to upset people who like it, so if eBay works for you, feel free to use it.

It doesn't upset me. Clearly, we should all be very cautious about buying something - anywhere, etc. That includes buying something in person in a store. With regard to eBay, look at all of the information - not just the picture, etc.

With "no refunds or exchanges", that would generally be a caution. Look carefully at the description, condition statement, etc. The eBay/Paypal "Get the item you ordered or get your money back" guarantee depends greatly on that strict description. The item is listed as "Used". In an abundance of caution, I would send a message to the seller asking "does it work".

Local pickup is a mixed bag, but I wouldn't bid on this if I could not pick it up. Trying to arrange shipping is really risky for several reasons. Then, when I went to pick it up, I would take along at least one witness. Not because of fear - just to make sure somebody else could confirm the transaction, condition, etc. [Of course, caution is advised, and for "local pickup" I usually arrange with the seller for the two of us to meet in some public place]

It turns out that I've had good experiences with eBay, but YMMV. I've had good experiences with Craigslist, too - but Craigslist doesn't guarantee anything, and there are a **LOT** of scams (including Segway scams) on Craigslist.

It will be very interesting to follow the progress of this particular auction.

The eBay buyer protection has a time limit (I think maybe 45 days). I once got scammed by a seller who strung me along saying he would fix it until it was too late for me to dispute it, then he just got nasty and stole my money.

eBay can be bad for sellers too - I sold a used computer on eBay, and I offered a return period in case the buyer had any problems or concerns. The buyer waited until well after the return window and then demanded that I take it back and give him a refund, which I refused, and although eBay sided with me that time, the buyer was still free to give me unfair negative feedback (whereas sellers can no longer give negative feedback to buyers).

I was not suggesting that CraigsList is any better.

I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do. I'm just explaining why I moved away from eBay.
