I too use a lanyard and find it to be a great, inexpensive solution.

I think in many ways, all of these options are a matter of preference.
I happen to not wear lanyards or other items hanging loosely around my neck. Maybe it is from several decades of working on machines and leaning over them, or some other issue, but I just am not comfortable with that solution, for myself. I know others who prefer it. Some wear keys, badges, pass cards, and a whole host of other things on a lanyard. If I have a pass key or card, like a security badge, I have a tendency to wear it on a retractable leash on my belt. Another common solution for many is a small backpack or shoulder bag. Likewise, I am not inclined to enjoy that. I wear a back pack when hiking over night, in other words, backpacking. I do not wear one any other time. At least I prefer not to. Again, this is just a matter of preference.

Lanyards, ties, long hair, (long beards ;-) ) are a definite no-no when using a lathe and the like, and a long scarf did it for Isadora Duncan in her Bugatti. Whatever is most convenient, except as someone who nearly had his seg hijacked once, I would never ever attach the key to the machine. The problem of carrying stuff is also difficult. Backpacks are sweaty and crease your clothing but there isn't really an alternative if you need to carry a 'briefcase' on a segway and don't want frames and brackets that make the machine more bulky. For a long time in our previous office I would ride into the office lift every day to get to my parking in the basement. Taking chunks out of the oak panelling would not have pleased the landlord. I wonder how much smaller an info key could be designed now or indeed if it could be entirely replaced by a smartphone app probably in conjunction with a small security dongle. The dongle would handle security and zigbee protocol communications, while the display and control functions would be on the smartphone.

I tuck the infokey under my shirt. There's no reason for me to look at the display while I'm riding.
