Default Pulled over for riding on the street

I posted this on the main board and thought I would post it here to get feed back from my fellow disabled gliders.

I rec’d my Segway in June of 03. I purchased it as a Mobility device to get me around as I have MS. I have been unable to take my Segway out into the real world for one reason or another until just recently. On a recent outing I was pulled over for riding on the road. The officer was nice about it but said since it was motorized and not registered it was not allowed on the road. He also said that he could impound it. After explaining I was disabled and was using it as a mobility device he informed it made no difference. I was on the road because the street had no sidewalks. Does anyone know the rule & regs for mobility devices in NY state.
