Default End of an era

I was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis in 2000. By 2003 I was having trouble keeping up with my wife on our walks. So we decided to get a Segway. It worked out wonderfully - I used it on walks around the neighborhood, hiking/biking trails, and local excursions around town. As my MS progressed, I used it more and more. We've had a ramp van since 2006, and that's made a big difference. It's come in handy on vacations: not just around California, but also Hawaii and New Mexico (I gate-checked the Segway on the plane as a mobility device).

Unfortunately over the past couple of years my MS has progressed to the point where I really can't keep using the Segway. It is increasingly difficult to step onto. My legs get tired quickly (although the Segseat helps here). Stepping off is frankly getting dangerous.

So after 14 years it's time to say goodbye to my Segway. It's been a great ride, but as Q said, all good things come to an end. I'm looking into a Whill (http://whill.us/), which can do some of the 'off road' things that a Segway can.

Thanks to all of those who, over the years, have provided support and ideas for getting the Segway accepted as a valid mobility device for the disabled.
