Thanks so much to everyone for all the helpful advice.
Yesterday I bought a very Segway-like Airwheel S5 (two 16-inch wheels, 650 w/h of electricity). See it here: http://www.airwheel.net/home/product/s5
I got it used on eBay for about 25 percent more than I paid for the MiniPRO.
It's lighter than a true Segway, so I'll be able to put it into the trunk easily, but big enough and heavy enough that it should handle less-than-perfect surfaces easily.
It's exciting that at long last there are lots of new electric scooters, bikes and other devices entering the market.
I do wish there were a place to try out the various machines, but I live in the boonies, so that's not going to happen.
If you'd like, I'll report back after I've had it for a few days.
