I recall ME having system restore available.
Anyhow, another thing you might want to try is using a registry repair tool. It may be that your files are not corrupt but perhaps entries to them in the registry are screwed. Also, try running a scandisk (in ME run "SCANDISK" from a start > run prompt, "CHKDSK" in XP) and see if that helps.
Can you identify exactly which files are corrupt - or perhaps suggest a reason for their corruption (ie. did you recently install or remove something? Was there a bad shutdown or power failure?)?
Don't see why Microsoft should take a beating here though. If it is XP, it is a pretty sound OS.
