Save a long walk back to my car/the sellers home base??

Lets say they are a set of questionable batteries (and I know nothing of how a segway exhibits or warns of impending shut down) What are the signs to look for.

Seeing as this is 'smart technology' I'd imagine the charge is monitored for heating, voltage, and perhaps current load. Then a calculation is done as to distance remaining. If the batteries are sketchy, will all of that be apparent?

What I am getting at, if I go out on an attempted 10 mile ride, what warning am I going to get (or what to look for) before i get stranded?
Should I just remain within walking pushing/pulling distance?
Thanks..

I realize that anything used that I look at may likely be one that one of our members (either active in the forum or not) may have decided to sell.

Cheers!
