Segway Lock Kit

Segway Lock Kit

So, lemme get this straight, I just dropped five large on a scooter designed to run errands but most places won't let me take it inside their shops with me. What am I supposed to do; leave it outside? Well, yes. It's not the shop's fault you're on the bleeding edge and don't expect any sympathy from the minimum wage workers at the cash register either.

Unfortunately, the current i2/x2 models are designed in such a way that securing them with a "normal" bike lock leaves the most expensive bits (the entire Base!) easily detachable by anyone with a hex wrench. The Segway Lock Kit solves this issue by attaching the lock to the bolt that connects the Lean Steer Frame to the Base.

Does this mean that your ride is as secure as Fort Knox? Well, no. Even very high security safes are rated in the amount of time they'll take to slow down, not stop, someone determined to get at them; usually just a couple of hours.

The Segway Lock Kit is really no different. It will deter the curious joy riders from swiping your ride while your back is turned at the burger stand, but let's be honest, it's not going to stop anyone if they have enough time, tools and opportunity. It's fine for a trip inside a shop, but I'm not 100% certain I'd feel "safe" leaving my i2 locked up, even at a mall in broad daylight, long enough to watch a movie.

BTW, I guess it should go without saying that the Segway Lock Kit is completely incompatible with the Segway LeanSteer Frame Tool-less Release, but what the heck, let's say it anyway.

Segway Lock

The early I2 Kryptonite locks that now come with a blade key instead of the old skate key style had some issues with the stem connector and the lock would bind. That seems to have been taken care of.

And this one works back and forth with the early Segway lock (with the skate key) all you need is the new mount.

A great lock!

For those of you who want more lock, use a Python lock from Master Lock, the cable end slips into the hole in the lean steer frame and you can lock up several machines. The Python works well with the X2

Realizing that most thefts of a Segway are acts of opportunity instead of planned heists, I feel quite comfortable with the safety of the unit when locked and alarmed. Agree with Quade that it should not preclude the use of the Tool-Less Release, but since the release is such a poor product, it is no big loss.

Except, of course, for that whole detach the Base with a hex wrench thing.

Honestly, on the "i3" Segway Inc needs to design some way to secure the Base, not the LSF.

Well if they go that far

Then they really want the Machine and will have bolt cutters to do away with the lock in the first place.

Like the Club - it really just sends the theif on to the next available target. Let's just try to make our Segways not that next target!

I like the lock overall, but mine has a couple of issues:

-It binds a bit in the LSF if rotated up a bit too much, occasionally making engagement and release difficult.
- It is fussy about getting to the release position prior to engagement with the LSF - pointing it key-side down and turning the key a few times is often necessary.

almost a great product

something that would improve it--longer cable; a tree it will go around isn't big enough to prevent theft, and if you can't get VERY close to whatever you want to lock it to then it won't reach. I also have a really sturdy cable-type bicycle lock, which sometimes I use with the Segway lock and sometimes alone.

The lock kit is a good idea for "safe areas," but it is totally incompatible with a pair of small bolt cutters. It is totally incompatible with the quick release so the design is not that great. The solution is a lock called "Onguard" Rottweiler, sold at REI (online and in the store). It costs $35, which is cheaper than the Segway lock system and a lot more sturdy. I take the Quick Release out, slide the Onguard into the hole with the lean bar in place and you have a very secure lock with a couple of feet to fit around something stationary. The solid Ulocks (like Kryptonite) work as well, but give you less mobility to reach something stationary.

While the Onguard is a little heavy, it fits into the front bag on my i2 wonderfully.

Good luck, and if anyone wants to purchase the Segway lock system from me (never used), I will let it go for $45.00 which is half the cost I paid for it.

If you haven't sold your lock already, I'll take it off your hands for $45.00. Send me a phone number or email and we'll do a deal.
Thanks,
Mary

Good lock...and very simple...to cut with a bolt cutters. But, with the alarm, it's a good choice in the crowd.
