X2 Noisy Drive Motor
 

I'm riding an X2 that has been getting louder and louder, the more I ride it. Before, I couldn't tell which side the noise was coming from. Now it's obvious that it's coming from the right side. It sounds like the drive motor is running low on fluid or something. I don't know if Segways get oil changes, or are supposed to have oil added ever. From what I read, you're supposed to leave them alone. But I also read that the drive motors are supposed to last forever. It certainly doesn't sound good, and it's getting worse. I took the wheel off and it seems like everything is tight like it should be. Although, with the wheel on, there was a little bit of wobble, like worn bearings might show.
Unfortunately, I don't have a local Segway dealer in my area. I am somewhat mechanically inclined, and am willing to get into it and try to fix it myself. I just don't know where to start. I even have some extra parts if I need a whole drive motor to swap.

The electric motor is inside the platform.
This is most likely to be OK.

The gearbox is on the outside of the platform.
Yes, it does have oil inside.
It may be low, but that is unlikely.

There is an elastomer between the motor output shaft and the gearbox input.
This is to reduce backlash.
This can wear.
If worn. yes it can make a bit of a grinding noise.
If you can locate the part, it should be quite cheap.

There's a bit of labor to pull it all apart, and put it back together again.

If one side is worn, the other is likely to be close behind, so replace both.

Most dealers ( if there's any left ) would have them.
Maybe the price of a cup of coffee, or two.

eBay and other similar places may have them too.
If not today, then maybe in a week, so keep looking.

Use the right tools to pull it apart.
Your will need a proper wrench and socket set, with Torx bits.
You may damage the whole thing if you use improper tools.

I have the right Torx bits and was able to get access to the Elastomer. It does need replacing. I haven't been able to find a replacement elastomer, but I do have a parts machine that has a good motor with good elastomer on it. I'm tempted to just swap the motors. Does it take a special tool to remove the motor?

That sounds promising.

The elastomer should just slide off.
You may need to wiggle it a bit, and work it off.

Clean the debris away before fitting the newer elastomer.


There's no need to replace the entire motor.
The motor resides inside, within the platform.
You have to open the whole thing to get at it, and there's the real risk of damage.

At what mileage did it start making noise?
