Lean Steer Adjuster Fix

Hello all, here is my latest project. I just hate it when I pull on the handlebar and it slips upward.

I have posted a project on the WIKI site with my fix.

Improvement on the adjustment knob

Don't forget to post your projects on the WIKI, that's what it's there for.

A single little washer added to the knob completely fixed my problem, as you have pictured in your project.

increasing knob size

Does anyone have a suggestion for adding something to the tightening knob to make it bigger, and easier to grip - especially when wearing gloves?

And while they are at it, please change the shape to hexagonal or octagonal. I find it difficult to crawl under a car to retrieve the sections of this as they roll away from me if accidentally dropped. I have a small wad of blue "tack-it" putty to hold the pieces together...and it does help.

Hi
Get in touch with "team222badbrad", I bought one of these from him.

Works very well

Looks like a great little tool.
Is there a website we can order?

I just accept orders via Paypal and private message. They are $15 shipped.

handle-bar to Lean-Steer tightening device

Your grip looks like an excellent solution to the tightening problem.

1. Of what is it made?
2. Do high or low temperatures affect its shape?
3. What is your email address (needed for PayPal)?
4. Do you have multiple units on hand (Every glider will want one!)?

It is ABS plastic.
Technically yes, but will it matter no.
I don't want the spam bots devouring my email so I will PM it to you.
Since these are produced on my 3d printer I can make these on demand so inventory is not a problem.

If anyone else wants to purchase just send me a Private Message.

This modification doesn't make the knob bigger, but it is easier to grip.

Bring it back

Anyone remember the original intended design that never made it into production (or at least, was never sold - H&S issues again if I recall)? This looked best in my opinion and would be easy to grip:

"LeanSteer Frame Tool-less Height Adjust"

I think the thing many of you are forgetting is that by increasing the friction against the shafts without increasing the torque you have to put on the thread is a VERY GOOD thing.

That is a very small diameter screw that you really don't want to strip!

I got the best solution as a tip from Jim Headley.

If you have the old-style i2 height adjuster, the one that used the hex screw, just use the new height adjuster screw with the old, slightly convex, gripper piece.

Works like a charm.

I just received 2 of these from team222badbrad. They are awesome! Very rigid and I don't see them cracking or bending at all.

Thanks again Brad!

Your welcome.

To make things easier I just put this on ebay for $16 shipped to the USA. Got to love the 12% profit ebay makes...

Another solution

I'm not sure if anyone else has tried it, but I use a rubber jar opener. I have a nasty habit of over-tightening and snapping or stripping bolts and screws. This little gadget lets me get a good grip without over-tightening. It's not the best solution, but it's cheap. And if you're lucky, you might already have an extra one or two in a kitchen drawer.

I also bought two of these and love them. I'm going now to eBay to buy six more!

washer and knob solution(sort of)

Since 2009 the additional washer solution is one I've used.

I give demo rides when I can. This involves adjusting the handlebars frequently.

The problem I've experiencced with this washer method is that while I have decent muscle control and strength it seems I rarely can hand
tighten the knob enough so that when adjusting the handlebars or pulling the PT up steps I find it frequently slips. On the flip side is that when I do manage to tighten the knob I then have difficulty in loosening it so as to make height adjustments for demo rides.

My solution to this has been to leave the knob loose all the time. Now hear me out!. I have found that when going down steps if you lightly grip the knob with one hand and guide the PT with the other the washer does help hold the height position in place. Yes, it's a two handed operation but one I find easier than fighting with the tightening and loosening of the knob.

I do like the idea of a bigger or different shaped knob.

The threads have stripped on my lean steer height control knob. Adding a washer won't help. Does anyone know the bolt size/diameter & thread count on the tightening knob? The closest I can guess is a #6 UNF fine thread, 40 threads per inch, but I don't know if it may be metric. I don't want to pay $40 or more for a replacement when I can replace it with a hex bolt for under a dollar.

RMullins 02-05-2018 09:34 AM

We sell the replacement height knobs for about $10. If you proceed with your own fix, make sure you use the insert over the bolt to create the proper tension to reduce wobble of the top portion of the leansteer.

*Try a M4 x 0.7 (you will have to measure the length you want)

If you decide to purchase a new knob, our location is in my profile.

Are the threads stripped on the knob bolt or on the control shaft? I would think it more likely that the shaft threads would strip first, since they appear to be in aluminum. If it's the control shaft, you can helicoil new threads into it.

This isn't a fix question, but a general lean steer knob question... my used i2 SE came with this knob. This isn't the "factory" knob, is it? And if not, does anyone know where it's available? It works beautifully - a much, much better replacement than the standard metal slip-grip knob!

comparableness 01-11-2019 11:52 PM

It seemed like I couldn't get the knob tight enough on the 2007 vintage X2 I just bought. Cleaned up the black plastic wedge piece and the metal track with soap. Then I scrounged a collection of steel washers. With one of them between the knob and the black wedge I was able to get the lean steer mechanism just about tight enough by hand.

Has anyone tried using a metal file to rough up the surface of the metal track to get more friction? I don't have a lot of hope. This mechanism seems poorly designed.
