Gen 1 i180 error
Any idea what this means?
I purchased a gen 1 just got some batteries for it that had been re-called, I put them in and it started and I had a quick ride around then the red light flashed and it went into safety mode. I got back on and all was fine and it did it again. Now it will not even go into balance mode. I have swapped the batteries around and put wd40 on the connectors and left the batteries out for 30 mins still got the red right with spanner. Any ideas It has 3 bars on right and 3 bars on left and spanner |
Hi Dave,
Where are you on the UK? I understand these bateeries quite well and have a set you could test with... you could bring the entire machine or just the batteries I'm in Derbyshire if it's not too far away. best Ian |
Dealer Support Likely needed.
Hi
I think that you will need some official Segway dealer support. Your Segway i180 maintains internal logs. If you have a critical error, or a collection of less critical errors, then the machine will go in to shut down, and display the code you describe. ( Bad batteries do not usually cause this ). ONLY a Segway dealer can assist you. They can download the logs and clear that file. Sometimes if there's simply been a collection of less critical errors, then merely clearing the log file will clear the error condition. Other times if there's been a critical ( or dangerous ) error, then service will be required. Good Luck Michael www.dgbint.com |
Is there anyone in the UK with the ability to do this, I went to Segway UK and they have replied to say that they do not work on Gen 1 segways.

Hi Jason,
When mine had an internal log error it wouldn't start at all. It does sound like a weak cell... Regards, Ian |
Shocking

I personally find it shocking ! Michael |
Segway manufactured Gen 1 machines until mid-2006. It's now mid 2017, but they discontinued parts (and service?) for Gen 1 some years ago. Historically, Segway service has been...um... less than desired or hoped for, but I didn't know that Segway pulled the Gen 1 communications equipment out of the field. That's....sad.
If this was your automobile, or even a brand-name lawn mower, you could still get parts and service. The patents on self-balancing are probably already expired, and the patents for Lean-Steer are elapsing soon. Perhaps a competitor can do better. |
After a second glance at this post another concept comes to mind. With these machines aging as they have we are coming across more CSB's that have failed. If your CSB has failed it can actually discharge one or both batteries instead of charging them. This occurs even while the charge lights show normal steady green.
Here is a quick video which you can use to quickly and simply test that your charger is actually charging the batteries. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3jhjJqJm7I If the charger has failed and the battery is allowed to be connected to it for a period of time it can damage the BMS. That could explain the performance issues and the final will no longer start issue. The other posters are very correct as well that it could be a platform fault as well. Good luck troubleshooting! |
