What Accessory Would You Like For Your Segway?

Since the segway is just begining to make it's appearance to the general public, what accessories do you think would be useful as an attachment for the personal transporter?

pt 01-17-2003 09:16 PM

i'd like something between the i and e series. a bar that held one cargo bag / brief case. i have the front bag and back pack--- but i use the ht so much, i'd go for more storage if i could.

cheers,

Whatever it takes to easily "drive" a shopping cart located in front of the Segway HT, that would be shopping heaven!

A shopping cart in front of the Segway would be great, why not one behind it?

When the Segway HT is a more frequent occurrence on the sidewalks, I would love for Segway LLC to provide some sort of 'Segway HT jumper cables' in that time of need. :) I figure I throw one of my old ideas in there from one of the old threads on this web site.

Seriously, I would love if Segway LLC could come out with built in Segway headlights. If they ever so this and Segway LLC hits their prime in success, and use a unique lightbulb, there is tons of money to be made just in that area.

From what I understand, there is no reason that they could not sell the sidebar & bags to i-series customers. They seem to operate from the old Ford saying "any color you want it, as long as it is black."

pt 01-18-2003 02:38 AM

i think the sidebar and bags might require other software on the unit (e series).

How about snow chains for the segway? Or perhaps snow tires for the segeay? Is it really that important. Let me know. And to think ... I am in Southern California :) Can owners change out tires for different wheather conditions and should Segway LLC consider this situation?

SegwayRealtor 01-18-2003 03:38 AM

Is the Segway size small enough to fit in the carry on slots of an airplane?

GlideMaster 01-18-2003 03:45 AM

I'd like to see an attachment on the left or right fender like the King of Balance has on his Seg for a briefcase, but without it being an E series.

GlideRealtor OOPs, I've done some gliding in snow and rain and had no problem with the tires traction what so ever. Snow tires would not hurt though. Chains would not work on the Seg unless you want to shred your fenders.

How about a nightlight attachment for those who travel in the evening. Perhaps the fenders on the wheels could use a simple red light attachment directed to the rear each side of the transporter to let people know the unit is on the road. Great for Street driving.

SegwayRealtor 01-18-2003 04:46 AM

Lets say you loose your key to start the personal transporter... a simple land based call or cell call to "on Star system" which is currently used in all GM cars would be a great advantage to re activate your Segway till you got home to get another key. It would be smart to contract with that company for the service and have the service programed into the current software. Are you listening Dean K?

SegwayRealtor 01-18-2003 05:07 AM

It would be smart to have a simple alarm box attachment with a key chain receiver so that if someone tries to move or steal your Segaway, you would be alerted immediately.

More accessories are on their way and threads like this one can help us make choices about future options available. Thank you!

Nope. Just a desire and a decision.

A low cost LED Light for both the front and rear if the transporter would work great since the energy costs makes them so efficient!

A luggage case to pack it for a plane ride.
Nicer hubcap designs.

Soft Foam inside with a semi hard outside design that can be compressed into a small package to be stored in a bag attached to the transporter. I can't imagine someone having to carry a hard case around once they get to their travel destination.

BruceWright 01-18-2003 08:29 PM

SR, I can't picture what you mean about a semi-hard outside. Is there a current case with semi-hard outsides and foam inside that collapses?

I myself just meant a hardcase on wheels that you could drag through the airport.

motleyorc 01-18-2003 10:22 PM

I'd love to see somebody come up with a way to attach your golf clubs to the Segway. What a great golf "cart" that would be!

"It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of Saphu that thoughts acquire speed, that lips acquire stains, stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion."

BruceWright 01-18-2003 10:34 PM

Here's what I'm thinking:

http://www.caseclub.com/ata_wheel.htm

They also make custom cases. With the wheeled case, when you got to your destination you could remove the segway and transfer your luggage into the case, and wheel it behind you!

What are the dimensions of a Segway with the handle detatched? What about the handle itself. Could they both fit in one of these cases, along with an allen wrench and a power cord? ;)

I was thinking of an outer case similar to neopreme gortex or vynal.

SegwayRealtor 01-19-2003 03:06 AM

XM Radio just came out with a boombox type radio for the great xm pure digital system. Perhaps they could come out with a smaller version that could be attacted to the drive arm. Wouldn't it be nice to hear xm as you drive down the road!

pt 01-19-2003 03:14 AM

hmm,

i might be putting on my "pt might need to lighten up hat" ;-] but i don't think it's a good idea to have music playing when on a segway ht, ears-eyes and all other senses should be 100% on the glide.

that said, the xm boombox is perfect for when you get to your destination with your ht, i'm thinking of getting one.

I would like a Power Plug for 12 volts avail at the front of the base and
on the center of the T-Bar. I also would like to be able to mount an extra battery to the top of each fender. I would like the generation 2 batteries to have an external plug that would allow an 18 inch jumper to be connected from each battery in the base to their counterpart located above each fender. This also would be useful for jumping a second SEGWAY.
.
. I have over 150 interior lights in our building that are 18 foot from the floor. My first commercial use for our SEGWAYS are to help us change our burnt out bulbs in the resessed cans. I have allready made "L" mounts for a 16 foot fiberglass ladder. I have installed size 11 motorcycle boots over the "L" mounts. I hope to save lots of time and be able to stay at the top of the ladder and change all the bad bulbs. I plan to place the ladder on the deck of the SEGWAY and strap the handlebar to the ladder. I hope that when I lean I can glide safely to each bad bulb. All the bulbs are in 2 rows so I should be able to do a row at a time. The acc. that would make jobs like this easier would be a foot plate with a couple 2 inch receivers. This plate could be attached over the existing foot plate.

Thanks for starting this thread,......Alan Travis

Headlights, tailights, and a cord reel (like on vacuum cleaners) would be nice!

Wait a minute!!! An 18 foot ladder on a Segway? And you'll be on it?

Alan Travis 01-19-2003 02:03 PM

Yes, I will be moving slowly and I will make sure it is fully charged so it will be at max performance. I will use the Demo, Black key.
Thanks,.......Alan

I agree pt you must be 100% when gliding. All senses are needed at all times.

Alan, you're insane! The Segway won't have the weight to catch you if you're off-balance. It won't be able to get up enough speed to get under you. It's not magic! If you swing backward a little bit, you are on one side of the ladder, HOW do you balance yourself to stop the thing from rolling? When you are standing on the segway, you have the ability to shift your weight in front of the axel to go forward, or behind the axel to go backwards, or on top of the axel to stand still. On a ladder, you have no control! It would be less crazy (but still crazy) to strap a ladder on a forklift and have someone drive you around.

On music while gliding... I wouldn't, but it would depend on WHERE I was gliding. I can see wanting to glide to music. I wouldn't use headphones though. I drive with music playing in my car, and I sometimes walk with headphones on (take them off at every intersection).

If I was gliding in a park, I might listen to music.

Hi Jgrohol ... good to know this thread being looked at and appreciated. I like many of the ideas people have included so far.

I appreciate the fact that for the time-being, the HT needs to be marketed as a "tool" rather than a "toy," and that the primary emphasis needs to be on productivity and safety rather than the "fun/coolness" factor.

From a safety standpoint, I feel that some sort of standard lighting system is the single most important thing you guys can be developing. Let's face it, people are going to be using the HT after dark. Lighting is not only important for the rider, in being able to see the path ahead, but it's just as important for the people we'll be sharing the sidewalk with ... pedestrians. Is there a way to incorporate a thin horizonal light-emitting "slit" somewhere down low in the forward part of the platform, that would cast a distinctive "glow" over the path ahead? This would accomplish four things:

A) It would illuminate the path of travel.
B) The light would have a very low angle of incidence, thereby increasing the visibility of any debris or raised "cracks" in the path of travel.
C) It wouldn't "blind" oncoming pedestrians.
D) It would cast a glow around the feet of pedestrians walking the same direction as we approach them from behind, letting them know a Segway HT is about to pass, and keeping them from being startled.

The second most important addition from a safety standpoint (in my opinion) would be the inclusion of some sort of built-in horn or bell. Again, it would be primarily for the benefit of pedestrians we're approaching from behind, and it would be best if it had a distictive, "friendly" sound.

There are quite a few things I can think of that would lend themselves well to building the "fun/coolness" factor (and I do think that ultimately will be what sells the HT), but I'll save those for another post. :)

Agree Brooster. A light is a must. Mabey a nice one with a nice blue tint that can suck off of the Segway's batteries would be nice.

Here are some of my ideas:

-Side and front grocery carrying bags- my grocery store near me has people taking out groceries to people's cars. If they use Segways, they can add bag holders on the sides and front instead of the cart that they use now.
-Light- see Broosters post.
-iPod or other MP3 player holding case on handel bars
-Refective tape for wheels, platform, handelbars, and front bag.
-Baby carrier- like the ones they have on the bikes, attach it to the back of the Segway and off you go with you kids!
-Side Laptop holder- to carry your new 12' PoweBook to and from work safely and securly in this nice pleather bag.
-Snow Plow- you don't have to use your car again! If those sidwalks are too deep in snow, just throw on the Segway Snow Plow and you'll clear a path for everyone! Pedestrian Rights Orginizations will love you!
-Segway Lawnmower Attachment- now the thing that looks like a pushmower can be one! It will stuck up the waste clipings and deposit them into your Sterling Engine!

Bluetooth enabled "ear piece" wirelessly attached to a small AM or FM radio or perhaps the xm radio. Their are cell phones that have just beem made available using the bluetooth technology. Perhaps they can do it with a radio.

SegwayRealtor 01-23-2003 03:32 AM

A lock box attachment for the segway would be nice to have. You could put your change, paper money, wallet, house keys, etc. in the device and lock it to the segway. That way, if you are going to the beach and happen to only wear your beach clothing which has no pockets ... you have a place to put your stuff.

SegwayRealtor 01-23-2003 03:37 AM

Surf board dolly which could be attached to the segway. Great for local surfers taking an early morning drive to the beach.

drucilla 01-23-2003 09:45 PM

a plug to recharge my cell phone...

mind if my segway and i pass?

wayne 01-23-2003 10:09 PM

Small Alternator that would recharge the batteries as you glide.

terryp 01-23-2003 10:33 PM

I think the combination of a light for night use and a 'horn' would be a great accessory. The horn would have to make a sound totally unique to the Segway though - something that would be attention-getting, yet pleasing. On hearing it, it would be immediately identified as a Segway requesting passage.
