Here are the lights I currently have mounted in the i2/x2 :

The headlight is mounted on the front accessory bar, and the 2 tail lights are mounted on each cargo/lift bar. I didn't want the extra complications of separate external battery packs, so each of these lights runs off of internal rechargeable AA or AAA batteries.

And, just for fun, I bought one of these for the leansteer pivot hub:

I just removed the leansteer hub emblem, and the Dot-it magnetically sticks to the pivot inside. When I'm not using the light, it stays inside the hub and the emblem fits back in place over it. I clock the emblem 1 tang clockwise so the nubs don't engage with their holes and just press it back into the hub. The emblem is still very secure and flush in the hub, but is easy to remove the next time. The standard Dot-it isn't as bright as a real headlight, and doesn't direct the light as usefully as the upper headlight, but it makes a fun accent / accessory light. The swivel version, which can be aimed, might be more useful :

New lights coming.....

Well I actually gave in and bought the Segway light off of eBay and was in an auto parts shop tonight and found some 12" strip LEDs. I am actually going to put those in the areas where the little reflective strip goes. Bought white for the front and red for the rear. Will post some pictures when I am done with mounting them. Thinking I am going to run them off of a small rechargeable 12V RC car battery unless I can find something better.

I use a light when I go from my car in the parking to the building every work day at about 4:30 AM. I don't have lights on the Seg. I use one of those head mounted lights set on strobe. I usually have on a ball cap and the headband on the light fits right over the cap nicely. I also wear a small backpack to carry my lunch in and have a fenix LD20 flashlight that clips on that and is set to flash with a red bezel on it. The LD20 is a small high-powered LED flashlight, really high quality. I use that as a utililty light all the time, so I usually have it with me and just clip it to the pack on the way in. Since its just a 30 sec ride I just took that route. If I rode more in the dark, I would probably get some lights mounted. The flashing lights seem to get alot of attraction. Just another option.

Headlight

I was using a niterider bike headlight that I paid $200 for. It crapped out and I bought a strap to your head light from Home Depot that was brighter for about $35. I modified it to mount on the leansteer. Looks great. For the rear I just clip on a flashing bike light to my clothing. For the times when there is no sidewalk and I have to glide in the street, I have multicolor flashing LED's installed in the rims and 10 LEDs in the leansteer.

I don't know where you purchased you NiteRider, but they will most likely fix it for you. I purchase all of my bike stuff from REI, 100% satisfaction guarantee. Yesterday I took in a 2 year old miNewt X2 and got a brand new X2-700 for only the difference.

I think the idea of a home depot light is great. I should look into that.

I recently added an Cygolite ExpiliOn 250 LED to my segway - 250 lumens - good price - mounts easily with included mount - all self contained (built in lithium battery) - charges from included USB charger or your laptop

three brightness settings in "bicycle mode" and strobe for daylight use
(even the lowest setting is bright enough for total dark gliding - when your eyes have adjusted - high mode is fantastic)

(lasts 3 to 10hrs)

picked mine up from mec.ca in Toronto

I just bought an SSC 900 lumen headlight/ bicycle light from Deal Extreme for about $45. It is EXTREMELY bright and the installation took all of about 30 seconds. If you have the grab handle, this is the only way to go! Here's the link and a video:

I've have a couple of the flashlight versions of this light and not only are they super bright, they are also durable and well made. This one comes with light, head strap (if you want to use it that way), two rubber straps, battery pack, and a wall charger. What a great deal!!

The comments on the site indicated that the battery case has cardboard components and the electrical connections are not well-sealed. Looks like a good deal, but you might want to make sure you aren't caught in the rain with it unless you make some modifications. I recommend Sugru!

As I mentioned, I've purchased 3 or 4 flashlights from this company and I've only had to replace them due to theft. The battery pack is shrink wrapped in rubber membrane and then is inserted into a nylon holster so I'm pretty sure it will be fine, plus I put it in the handlebar bag. I really like the fact that the mount is both quick and easy to install and remove as well as adjustable on the fly. Here are some pics:
