As a past Segway distributor, I am personally distressed to witness that Segway has discontinued all support for Gen-1 machines. I still have some old documents on file. I am pleased to share the official 'Service Manual' here. Hopefully it may be of some assistance to those in need. Cheers Michael |
Agreed with the disappointment... but it is an 18-year-old product. And Segway ain't no GM or Ford in terms of its ability to support old products indefinitely.
That means that most Gen-1 machines will eventually die. There are so many things that go wrong with them as they age... |
I understand the "18 year" number, but Gen 1 machines were still being sold as new through mid-2006. Maybe later, if dealers still had them in stock. In my counting, it's been a bit less than 14 years since Segway stopped offering Gen 1 machines.
That's a distinction without a difference, especially since Segway stopped supporting Gen 1 machines years ago. What was it, 6 years ago? 8 years ago? Still, that's better than some modern electronics, for which support (or even functionality) can evaporate very quickly when the manufacturer embraces a new technology or new model. Even as a one-time supplier to Segway, this is the first time I have seen (what passes for) a Segway service manual. Quite minimal, but that is the direction Segway LLC/INC decided to go with their service. Lots more people would be likely interested in a Gen 2 service manual, if there happens to be a past Segway distributor that has one of those on file.... |
Here in New Zealand I still have a dozen or more customers who actively use their Gen 1 machines every day to get around. They either just like, or rely upon, the rigid Control Shaft.
I wonder how many units are out there still running that I am unaware of? I imported and sold about 115 Gen 1 units between the end of 2003 and mid-2006, as I recall. I still have spare parts (mostly used parts, nowadays), and assist the active users with these. Fortunately battery packs are backwards compatible...but CSBs are becoming like hen's teeth. These days, if a platform develops a 'latch fault' then the only option is to swap out the PowerBase with a known-good PowerBase that is still going strong. Fortunately there are a few around. But it does seem a shame that nothing can be done to repair a latched unit anymore. Unlike classic cars that enthusiasts love to restore, repair, polish up and take out for a drive...it seems that as we glide headlong into our digital future that classic PTs are destined to become static displays only. |
Quite frankly, I would be a lot more understanding if INC’s service were better overall. Admittedly, it has been a while since I’ve had a repair done, but as far as I know, it still takes months of waiting (and lots of money) to get a repair done.
I might understand INC saying, “We’re discontinuing Gen 1 support in order to provide optimal support for other models.” But this is more like saying, “We barely provide any support at all, and now we’re providing even less.” There is also another problem, which is what to do with broken gen 1 machines. Segways are not the easiest thing to dispose of. |

Gen 1 keys
So, this topic begs the question: is there anyone out there that can still program the gen-1 key fobs?

Yes.
I can program or re-program iButton devices ( the key FOBs for gen 1 machines ). I need to know your keycode. With that private info, I can then create a key with speed limit of your choice, steering sensitivity of your choice and your keycode. If you know your keycode, great. If you don't, I can read it back from any working key that operates your machine. Let me know how I can assist you. Michael www.dgbint.com |

It's probably time to open up that info, and make it public. Segway won't, so maybe I should. There are 2 parts to the process. Hardware You need hardware like this, to write to and read from any iButton: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Maxim-DS...R/272234494660 Plus you need software to run this hardware. It is reasonably readily available. Software / Data One needs to calculate a data string to write to the iButton. This string is a compilation of Keycode + parameters.
