Wow! I gotta new speedo and odo on my 180i. Cobbled from an off the shelf bike speedo at the bike shop ($30). Works like a charm. Speedo, odo, timer, clock, Took me an hr to make it work on my Segway. This is an older model computer that I have had lying around for a few years. This model may not be available now. I did a check on the internet to see what speedo's were available and there are quite a few, 1/2 of them wireless. Wireless would be nice on the Segway so you don't have to route wires, but the reports I saw say they only transmit about 18" which is not enough for the Segway.

Go to your bike shop and buy a CATEYE Enduro 2 bike speedo. I will show you how to make the mods if you email me.

I have a better idea:

You post it here and we maintain our privacy (I already receive enough SPAM in my mailbox). If you are really of good will, you don't need our e-mail address to share the information.

Florin,

Go to your bike shop and check out the Enduro 2 by CATEYE. I am sure you can figure out the rest yourself.

When you had to calibrate the speedo sensor with the wheel diameter, was it that difficult or did they provide you with measurements?

Austin,

I calibrated the speedo head by doing a roll-off with the Segway wheel. Mark the wheel and a spot on the floor, do one rotation of the wheel and measure distance. I did this 3 times to confirm distance - - 58.25 inches which is that same as 148cm . The 148 in inputed to the speedo head which then gives you proper miles/kilos traveled. The number which the speedo head will accept is 100 to over 220 so the 148 is almost in the center of acceptable diameter wheels. This speedo head also records accumulated distance, trip distance, average speed, max speed for two different machines. After about 50 miles of riding I looked at the max speed attained, it was 12.8 mph., very close to Segway claims.

I used a Cateye Enduro 8, also about $30.

Here's what I did to calibrate;

Tape two pieces of paper to the floor - spaced about the distance you expect the wheel to make in one (or more if you have the room) revolutions. With a pencil make a thin (in width) but thick (in the amount of lead you use) line across the paper.

With the tires properly inflated ride the HT across the pencil line and onto the other piece of paper. The tire will carry a bit of the line from one piece onto the next. Measure the distance between the two and divide by the # of revolutions and you have the number you need.

If you want the best accuracy you need to have the same load on the tires while doing the measurment as you expect to have during normal riding. More revolutions between the lines will give better accuracy also.

Of course you are not limited to pencil and paper, a spot of mustard works fine too.

Goop is what I used to glue the sensor and wire on with.

I bought a Protege Bike Computer and mounted it on my Segway a while ago. Here is my web page describing the installation: www.sdobrowski.net/segwayht and click on Speedo. I have since made a small shelf on the underside of the handlebars to mount the display and my GPS.
