I saw this on Gizmodo.com & thought it might be of interest.

Very interesting... Not sure if I can see that one happening. Just thinking of the safety.

I love riding the HT!

Looks to me like a photoshopped image...not terribly well done at that. Nightline is on the money, I highly doubt Segway would ever undertake something like this that would be an obvious departure from a safety standpoint. There was some video a while back about a Japanese balancing platform that functioned on this premise, quite funny to watch for the most part

Gizmodo pretty much admits the pic is a photo-chop:

quote:If you know more, feel free to let us know (pictures, unlike our half-assed photoshop job, are welcome, as well).I thought the amusing part was that the lack of the handle would make it easier to take the HT up the stairs! - like it weighing 80 pounds instead of 85 pounds and lacking a convenient place to guide the power-assist would make it easier.

They also mention strapping (the HT) to one's back. A sure sign the editors at Gizmodo haven't been anywhere near a HT. They seem to be convinced a handle-less Segway HT would be the same form and function as a skateboard.

Anyway, if this isn't some sort of rumor-phishing tactic, perhaps we should be prepared for another "concept" from Segway LLC?

What ever will they think of next? A headless horseman perhaps?

That thing would be hard to stay on in turns. It wouldn't be very stylish if it was ever made.....

The platform automaticly tilts sideways (Like a bank on a racetrack) so that the rider always stands with their center of gravity pushing them straight down onto the platform.

An alternative would be to ride with two friends running along side, to give you stability while you need it...

That would be cool, but probably won't happen.

Zoli,

In my humble opinion, it is not as far away as you may think.

The automotive industry already has weights that shift to the oposite direction as centrifical force to help flatten the ride of a car or SUV making a hard turn.

When any wheeled vehicle is making a hard turn, the tendency to stay in motion the direction it was moving will make it lean to the outside of the turn. With the weights mentioned above being forced to the inside to compensate, a better balance is obtained.

I had a european sports sedan that changed the camber of the wheels to lean toward the turn and a similar effect was realized.

We do the same thing by leaning to the inside of a hard turn.

I do not think the day is too far away where technology will assist with this lean on the segway or similiar device...

OK, where do you mount the light for the night glide? What about bags for the lap top?

I think they need to practice the photo shop skills a tad more.

Oh bull Karl, everybody knows you just reinitialize the deflector array and add more power to the inertial dampeners and everything rides smoothly!

Remember the TV show, Made in America? They did a segment on SegwayLLC and in the background was a red and white Segway prototype with ski pole style handles?
Looks like you might be able to use your knees or body to control and go hands free.

John,

We both know power won't be available for your modifications till they come up with Dilithium Chrystal Ion Batteries...

Wouldn't that be cool! Dilithium Chrystal Ion Batteries!!

Anyone invent them yet? Kamen, what's keeping you from doing it?

Doug showed the Made In America video at Segfest Sac. Very cool!!

I know you were being facetious, however, even the RMP has the original Segway handle on it...so clearly they still need it for the key port, and probably other electronics.

:)

My guess is that we'll see a WHEELless Segway (hover) before we see a handleless Segway!

Yosgof, thats a good one. :)
Just give me the Warp drive, with maximum stun, as I go by, you know they all will be motionless when that happens. :)

Karl, I have been working on that mechanically for awhile, with handlebars, minus the weights. Cause you are the weight, been gathering up the parts needed too.
