Ok, I really need help. My computer has some corrupted files, I dont have an internet connection on it, and I cant open system restore. And windows media player is displaying a message saying that an internal error has occurred. So no internet connection, system restore's not working, and neither is windows media player. Is there anyway to fix this? I tried to open system retore in safe mode but it still did'nt work.

Thanks and I hope someone will actually repond to this rather than deleting it like idiot microsoft.

Microsoft windows XP home edition, intel pentium 4 mobile 1.70GHz with 400 MHz system bus, 512 MB RAM, 40GB HDD

A bit more info please. Operating system? Me? Xp?

If your system is hosed, I'd re-install your os again over the top of the existing one. Failing that, re-install after formatting.

If it's just media player that is hosed, I'd d/l a new copy and re-install. As you don't have a net connection, perhaps a friend can pass you a copy on CD? Or maybe find it on a magazine coverdisc?

Good luck!

Don't forget to backup!

It has to be Xp, that's the only one that has system restore (as far as I know).

If system restore doesn't work anymore (not from windows, nor from startup), then I'm that it isn't something that you can easily solve. I assume that you have been able to backup your valuable data, which you don't want to loose. If you can't make a backup via windows anymore, then I can recommend you to ask someone to burn a CD with Knoppix. Knoppix is a very user-friendly linux distribution which can start from CD, supports a lot of hardware and is able to read from NTFS partitions.

Ok, when you have made a backup, it's time to get started. There are 2 approaches, the difficult (and long) one, and the bit easier (and shorter) one. If you want to go for the long approach, just continue reading. If you want to go for the shorter approach, then goto the point (start here) in this message.

Try re-installing your windows, like gbrandwood suggested, personally I always have the experience that it doesn't help since somehow the corrupted files aren't replaced, but perhaps your more luckly. Since your system restore doesn't work, I'm afraid that the problem is bigger then just media player and it won't be fixed by reinstalling media player, but you never know with Microsoft products.

(start here)

Format your C partition/drive. If you don't have multiple partitions yet, then it might be a good idea to make them now, then you can store your data on the second partition, then you can format C while your data is always save on D. Check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348/en-us on how to do this.

After your disk is formatted/partitioned: install windows (and your software) from scratch.

Perhaps you already have one installed, but otherwise make sure to install a virusscanner and a firewall. Personally I'm happy with Norton Internet Security, but there are a lot of good programs. Also consider to install some anti spyware program, like ad-aware. Then you should have a good solution to avoid problems in the future (as long as you keep them up-to-date).

Don't forget to restore your backup.

I hope this helps you further, otherwise just let it know by posting another message.

Kind regards,

Florin

With a name as "ibook8008' I would assume he is running a mac.
I'd need a lot more information but I would remove that MS product first and then try the system restore disc. If all fails, I hope you have backup.
A LaCie would work well for you as well as connecting to the net and utilizing idisk. I do both.

Bob.

Where goeth I, goeth my Segway.

If it's an x86 machine I recommend trying the Ultimate Boot CD (assuming of course it can still boot to CD and that you have a way to burn it)
http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/
It has lots of tools that might help. I've used it to fix a hosed W2K install, meaning that I was able to get it to run long enough to copy off the important data before wiping the disk and "freshening" the OS.

For a Mac, boot an install CD (OS X preferred) and run "Disk Utility" from the CD. From there you should be able to verify or repair the disk or if you have a backup image, you can also restore the image as well.

Anyhow, another thing you might want to try is using a registry repair tool. It may be that your files are not corrupt but perhaps entries to them in the registry are screwed. Also, try running a scandisk (in ME run "SCANDISK" from a start > run prompt, "CHKDSK" in XP) and see if that helps.

Can you identify exactly which files are corrupt - or perhaps suggest a reason for their corruption (ie. did you recently install or remove something? Was there a bad shutdown or power failure?)?

Don't see why Microsoft should take a beating here though. If it is XP, it is a pretty sound OS.

Good luck, ibook8008!
