January 24, 2003 - newhavenregister.com - West Haven -- Come summer you may see the local "sheriffs" who patrol the city’s 1½-mile-long boardwalk rolling into the sunset on newfangled steeds. The West Haven Police Department could be among the first departments in the state, and possibly the nation, to begin using the Segway Human Transporter as part of regular police business. The Segway is the two-wheeled "personal vehicle" that was touted as revolutionizing civilization as we know it. Earlier this week, San Francisco became the first city in the nation to officially ban inventor Dean Kamen’s self-balancing electric transport device from its sidewalks, even though they won’t be available to the public until March. But enlightened West Haven cops, who were among the first people in the nation to try out one of the $5,000, gyroscopically controlled contraptions in a demonstration Thursday..
