Care and Feeding of Batteries

Facilitator: Ron Reich, Leader of Design Engineering
This presentation provides tips for caring for your battery in order to optimize range and the long-term life of the battery pack. Ron will offer riding suggestions that can help maximize your battery range.

The Parts That Make the Product

Facilitator: Ron Reich, Leader of Design Engineering
This interactive overview of the parts that are at the heart of the Segway HT will provide insight into what makes the Segway HT so remarkable. Ron will use a display of actual components to walk you through the different parts of the machine.

Segway HT Remote Mobility Platform (RMP) Demonstration

Facilitators: John Morrell, Chief Development Engineer, Michael Kaufman, Embedded Software Engineer
Segway engineers will demonstrate an adaptation of the Segway HT balancing technology recently developed for DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). This device allows equipment to be deployed on a remotely controlled balancing mobility platform. This platform features many of the same kinds of benefits familiar to you with your Segway HT but for moving equipment rather than human cargo: a high center of gravity with a small footprint, a smooth coordinated ride, and the ability to turn in place.

The Soul of Segway: Integrating Engineering and Design in the Development Process

Speakers: Doug Field, Chief Engineer and Soulkeeper, and Scott Waters, Lead Industrial Designer
In this presentation Doug will focus on the difference between "ideation-focused" and "execution-focused" cultures, and the need to marry the two in order to consistently deliver successful, innovative products. Scott will focus on the design and creation of the Segway HT, discussing the principles involved and the achievements that garnered the 2002 Industrial Design Excellence Award (Gold Medal in Transportation) and the 2003 I.D. Magazine Annual Design Review Consumer Products award.

Panel Discussion with Segway Product Development

Facilitator: Frank Tropea, Administrator SegwayChat.com
Panel Participants: Doug Field, Chief Engineer; JD Heinzmann, Development Engineer; Ron Reich, Leader of Design Engineering and Scott Waters, Lead Industrial Designer;
Members of the Segway Product Development team will answer questions about the product development process, invention and the Segway HT that SegwayFest attendees submit. Please submit questions to the question box at the cocktail reception on Friday evening. Due to time constraints not all questions will be answered. Attendees will be called upon to pose the selected questions.

Keynote Address

Speaker: Dean Kamen, Founder and Chairman, Segway LLC; President, DEKA Research and Development Corp., Founder of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)

Energy Analysis

Facilitators: JD Heinzmann, Development Engineer, Michael Kaufman, Embedded Software Engineer, John Morrell, Chief Development Engineer
Verify that your Segway HT is using its battery power efficiently. Find out how your riding style affects the range you get from a battery charge. Take a peek at the awesome amount of data the Segway HT relies on to produce a safe and satisfying glide. Segway engineers will attach a specially instrumented control shaft to your machine that will display the energy being used and other interesting parameters. They will run your machine on a test stand to verify that it is transmitting power to the wheels efficiently. You will also be able to drive around and see how your gliding style demands power from the batteries and how it affects range. Let’s see who can glide the most energy efficiently. Try writing your name in the path that you glide and see how it appears in the data. You will leave with a printout summarizing the energy performance of your Segway HT and other scintillating data.

In order to participate you will need to sign up on site for a time slot and bring your own machine to the Energy Station. Space is limited.

Segway HT Software Upgrades

Facilitators: Jeff Brown, Service Technician, and Michael Kaufman, Embedded Software Engineer
Still or video photography not allowed in upgrade area.
A Segway Service Technician will outfit your Segway HT with a complimentary upgrade to 11.0 software, the latest version available. The installation process will include downloading certain information regarding your Segway HT use including total hours of run time as well as some reliability and performance data. This is the same information a service technician would normally retrieve if trying to diagnose a broken HT. Your willingness to share this data will allow us to understand and evolve our product based on Segway use from our most passionate and loyal customers.

In order to participate you will need to sign up on site for a time slot and bring your own machine to the Upgrade Station. Space is limited.

Cleaning and Maintenance of Your Segway HT

Facilitator: Jeff Brown, Service Technician
Learn the importance and how to’s of keeping your machine in tip-top shape.

p-Series Demonstrations

Experience the highly anticipated Segway HT p-Series for yourself.

INDEPENDENCE™ IBOT™ Mobility System Demonstrations

Facilitator: Kurt Heinzmann, Development Engineer, DEKA Research and Development
Kurt will demonstrate the IBOT and answer questions about its development and its role in the lives of individuals with disabilities.
