New York State Electric and Gas is hitting the streets with their new Segway Human Transporters. The HT's as they're called, are being used by NYSEG meter readers.

The Mechanicville Division of NYSEG has two HT's. The all-terrain vehicles can go anywhere a human can walk. It's top speed is about 12 miles per hour. The new mobiles are quite a sight for some residents around town.

Todd Hart, a meter reader said, "Traffic stops, and people come out of their houses, it's like nothing they've ever seen before."

Jim Salmon, manager of Outreach and Development said,
"First electronically self-balancing human transporter on the market. We heard about this and thought that this might be a way to increase productivity and efficiency in our company."

NYSEG is testing the vehicles for three months to see if it increases the efficiency of meter reading.

Segway is based in Manchester, New Hampshire and sell their vehicles for around $5,000. The company is also marketing the vehicles to the public. They said its a great alternative to cars.
