Emergency Medical RESCUE of New York City recently acquired two Segway HT's and they are fully stocked with Basic Life Support equipment and defibrillators. We placed the Segways in service in July, 2008.

This is the first utilization of medically equipped Segway HT units for emergency medical response in New York City.

Are there are any other people using there segways for this purpose?

Thanks

This is great!

Do you have any data yet? Number of incidents per hundred hours of patrol (or whatever units would fit), average response time in crowded environments, etc?

We got the them towards the end of the season. Between FedEx and UPS damaging them in shipment and equiping them we didn't get them in service til the end of July.
We did 7 events the avg number if calls 4-5 and they were all minor. Looking forward to next season, but we are already having battery issues...

emrnyc,

This has been talked about lots on this forum. Basically the voltage in one or more of the cells in your battery back has fallen below a certain threshold.

There are people here that have the equipment to bring your batteries back to life. Look up DrMarty (a pal of mine) and MTOBattery.

I remember there was an medical team in La. or Fla. that used Segways. I found this old photo from several years ago in my files.

One other thing ...... There are so few Segways in New York City at times there has more interest in the Segways than the event we are covering!

I was under the impression that some of the police segways carry emergency medical gear, so you may find some that kind of cross over a couple different lines, regarding security, medical and other topics...

I thought I had heard of some theme parks in the south that use the segways as medical personnel carriers (of course, most theme parks are south of Boston).

I know that Segway Of Dubai made a segway that had some fire fighting equipment on it for brush fires, and I do not know of the medical capacity of that unit, but most firemen are pretty good at helping out as first responders.

Keep us posted. I think this is a great application. Good luck.
