I bought a used HT (i167 or i180, I keep forgetting) in early 2006 and couldn't go shopping - or anywhere else that requires much walking - without it. When I'm not shopping or otherwise ur-walking, it's plugged in in my kitchen happily blinking slowly at regular intervals. Until recently. Now it's blinking two quick blinks and a pause, two quick blinks and a pause, and so on. What's happening? Is there a limit on how long it should be left plugged in?

TIA

I don't have an answer (I am sure someone here will) but I can tell you all four of my older Gen1s have different blinking patterns. No idea why though.

Liz' Ola ola, can't resist
10 mph is the video for you.
~1.It is not a kitchen vehicle.
~2.Two quick blinks are better than a solid single.
~3.Pause
Here is whats happening, dynamic stabilization

The onlt thing worse than pluging something in is not gliding IT.

I think that there are various combinations of LED flashes..

The first part depends on the battery variety.
Flash patterns are different for different battery ( software ) revisions.

In addition, there are several phases of the battery charge process, and they are indicated by variations of flash pattern.

Of course, there are actually 2 independent batteries and two independent chargers.
They are independent, and thus two differing ( time skewed ) sequences are likely, which can be even more confusing.

As long as you don't see red flashes, you are likely to be OK.

Some of the details are included in the manual.

You are doing the correct thing by leaving it on charge.
It is safe to so continually.

Now it's blinking two quick blinks and a pause
On the main site of Segway (in my country), you can show a legend of the LED (green)...

Like you show, the blinking mode with one pause is the "maintenance mode" for batteries packs. :)
This process is randomly loaded by the base because you don't lose the charge to complet a "emergy shutdown".
It's for determine the zero level of the batteries pack and re-calibrate the Level Gauge of Batteries.
