SEATTLE _ Six Seattle Public Utilities meter readers began testing high-tech sidewalk scooters on their routes Monday.

They'll keep logs to see how long it takes to complete their routes and how their ability to read meters on the first attempt is affected.

The city purchased 10 of the Segway Human Transporters in August and will spend two years testing them. Parks employees, building inspectors and emergency technicians at large public events also will get a turn.

The director of the city's fleets, John Franklin, said the Segways could fit in with the goal of making vehicles as "green" as possible since they run on electricity and produce no emissions.

The battery-powered, two-wheeled Segways can transport one person at more than 12 mph.
